I've never liked Paul Simon's version of Surfer Girl. He changed the melody so much it's not even the same song. Instead it sounds more like a Simon & Garfunkel song. Brian sort of alludes to that in the interview segment.

I thought--and think--it was brilliant. And it's a far bigger tribute that Simon did more than just ape the original. After all, the original exists, why just mimic it? The real tribute in Simon's performance was moving the tune out of Beach Boys territory and into the American songbook. He showed it out of context and it still held up. That's a great song that can do that. And he sang and played beautifully. As for whether a person likes the original or Simon's more doesn't matter at all to me.

Yes. I respect and admire Paul Simon for taking the time and making the effort (I realize he's a gifted writer/musician) to re-arrange the song. He could've showed up for rehearsals and, as Luther stated, simply sang the song as written by Brian (and no offense to those who did). On top of all of that, Paul nailed it; his guitar playing and vocal was perfect.

Dang, that note at :33 is even higher than the "domino" high note in Surf's Up! I love it.

Speaking of which, does anyone know who sings the VERY high harmony on this ("domino") around 1:13....?

A fairly down-to-earth person who once was around the Beach Boys quite a bit "back in the day" once said to me, "the problem with Mike is he always took himself so damn seriously."  Which to me was a pretty illuminating statement.

I watched that ^ about seven times in a row. That's not Brian Wilson, it was Glen Campbell! No, seriously, I wonder what Landy gave Brian before that show; he was making some strange faces - and yelling! But, did you notice how happy all the guys looked with Brian so actively participating.

The Beach Boys have to re-record "Runaway" for the new album. police

It always cracks me up to see Brian walk past Carl with the most straight face at 1:04  Roll Eyes

I hope to find more stuff from that concert in my vaults!  Grin

In Runaway, it's nice how Brian basically takes 30 seconds off after the organ solo. Carl takes the harmony (and it sounds suddenly good). Brian Wilson, dancer and handclapper.

Isn't it weird how Brian had that strange little burst of energy, and then instantly ran out of steam right after the solo? Landy's "medication" at their best.  Roll Eyes

In Runaway, the way that Brian looks straight up to the sky with that huge smile out of nowhere is just so Brian.

In What You Do To Me, if you notice when Brian walks straight past the stage, Carl gives him a little love tap. And I can't believe Dennis is actually trying to sing a harmony on that, if his voice was anywhere near it was during Atlantic City, I couldn't have imagined what Al was thinking!

No, Dennis isn't fooling anybody with his 'backing vocals', but it's quite touching to see him giving Carl a bit of moral support - unlike Brian who fixes Carl with a rather scary glare!

An alternate version of "In The Back Of My Mind," with a single-tracked vocal, superb:

You can only "rearrange" a song so much until the melody is completely different, which is what I think Paul Simon did to "Surfer Girl"

I certainly expect the Beach Boys to be cheesy, but does it have to be THAT cheesy?
