Glen Campbell doing a BBs medley, I'm guessing late 70s. And what a guitar solo in Surfin USA.

You can only "rearrange" a song so much until the melody is completely different, which is what I think Paul Simon did to "Surfer Girl"

True. But a melody is only a part of a song. The harmonic structure (and of course general rhythm, phrasing, etc) are also a big part of things in the pop world. And so a rearrangement, even with a different melody, can still be quite clearly that same song. Every Brian Wilson chord contains anywhere from one to five or six notes, and they are all fair game. A casual look at the jazz world shows this to be standard practice.

Verbatim reproduction is dull. Thoughtful reinterpretation can be wonderful or horrible, but at least it is something.

Do you by chance have Take A Load Off Your Feet from Seattle, 1975?

I got this one of TALOYF in 1975, not sure if it's from Seattle tho:

Okay, Christoph, I have two things I've wanted to see that used to be on youtube...let's see if you have either of them:
"Angel Come Home" from the Midnight Special (1979)
or
There used to be one or two clips of and interview with Brian and Carl from the mid-90s talking about "Sloop John B" and a few other things...really cool...I remember both of them looked pretty heavy and wore sunglasses.

I uploaded them back then. Unfortunately I can't get any videos on there anymore. Don't know why. The videos where shot for an interview-video for "Forrest Gump", where the artists talk about their experiences and about the song of their's that is in the movie I believe. So it should be from around '95
Still have the videos on my computer....

I might have the first one. I remeber seeing the second one but I don't think I have it on my disk. Isn't that the clip where Carl refers to the guitar "ostinato" and Brian cracks up over this word?   Cheesy

I might also upload some more clips from Seattle 1983 and Melbourne 1978. Sometimes youtube just doesn't seem to work properly  Huh

Yes, please add them ! That's an interesting, though sometimes very sad era of the band....

Six words: "Can Brian Wilson dance or not?!"

Classic:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbLx5Y5zRww&feature=channel

I watched that ^ about seven times in a row. That's not Brian Wilson, it was Glen Campbell! No, seriously, I wonder what Landy gave Brian before that show; he was making some strange faces - and yelling! But, did you notice how happy all the guys looked with Brian so actively participating.

The Beach Boys have to re-record "Runaway" for the new album. police
Dude...Brian looks like he just busted one at the 59 second mark LOL

Thanks for posting. This is very interesting. And also nice to see Carl admit that from time to time the criticism of them just doing the oldies is appropriate

Anyone recognize the first song they're singing (at 0:23)?

Yes, it's from the musical The Sound of Music, called "Sixteen Going on Seventeen." Great song.

Mike makes a very good point in the Liner notes video...almost all of Brian's great compositions of the 80s had been started and in some form finished by 1984 or 1985, I know that for sure: "Melt Away," "Don't Let Her Know She's An Angel," "Water Builds Up," "There's So Many," "In the Nighttime," "Black Widow," "Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long," "Wondering What Your Up to Now," all done in that period...a real creative flourish for him.
