I imagine that Heroes & Villains had a fair crack at the radio market in 1967 but achieved relatively low sales. Can low sales: radio play ratios be quantified?

I believe the term for such an, ahem, phenomenon in the radio industry was "turntable hit".  I also heard somewhere that Come Go With Me was a "turntable" hit.  I can believe that.  As much as I liked it, I was quite surprised that it charted top forty in its time (got to the low teens if my old memory serves me well).  I think the Cowan Record Report or some such outfit was hired to promote it as a single to push the Ten Years of Harmony release, as the Boys mightily needed a hit single at that time.

"Sail On Sailor" got a lot of play here in the NW, I was surprised that it didn't even dent the top 40 nationally. "Good Timin" also got a lot of play, and only made it to #40. It's OK" was a top 40 single, but I NEVER heard it played back in '76.

The most famous "turntable" hit is Michelle by the Beatles.  Got lots of airplay without ever being a single.

It also won Song of the Year at the Grammys which usually only goes to singles.

I guess some songs got real succesfull in local areas. Here for example the stats for "Wild honey", taken from wikipedia:

Quote
The single peaked at No. 22 in Cash Box and No. 14 in Canada. It broke the top 10 playlists of many large markets including Philadelphia, Detroit, Dallas, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Cleveland and the rest of Ohio, Portland, Phoenix, and Vancouver, and lodged at No. 2 in Washington DC for three weeks, kept out only by the Monkees; it reached No. 20 in New York.

I don't know how accurate that quote is but I think it would be interesting to see the song got Top Ten in many areas. There are certainly more infos about other singles as well on wikipedia.

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Well, it didn't hurt that it was on the flip side of Surfin' Safari.
