Mike posted a great pic of Jodi Gable with the BBs today on Facebook.

THROWBACK THURSDAY!

The Beach Boys with Jodi Gable of Burbank High. Jodi met the boys for the first time at an Olive Rec Center dance when she was 13. Amazed by their sound, she spoke to the boys and they subsequently asked her to head up their fan club. Jodi eventually left Burbank High to finish at Hollywood Professional School and work for the boys full time, hiring classmates to help open fan mail. She stayed on as head of the fan club until she was 20 and then moved on to pursue a singing career of her own. <<

Be even more cool if he had posted the date the pic was taken, and where...

Side note: it's so interesting to see David Marks' height noticeably change throughout his brief tenure in '62-'63. I'll be historians have used his height to help date early photos. Was he the shortest guy in the band when he first joined? He certainly wasn't by the end.

Late August 1962 at Pandora's Box, during their first (five consecutive nights) residency there. Jodi attended every night. There's another really cute photo of Jodi sitting beside Dennis.

Just a few months before his untimely passing, Jimmy O'Neill, former KRLA and KFWB disc jockey, and Shindig host, agreed to a four-hour interview with me for Becoming the Beach Boys, 1961-1963. It was O'Neill who brought the Boys to Pandora's Box. O'Neill kept a fairly low profile in his older years and it took me a long time to find him and an even longer time to persuade him to do the interview. Great stuff. Most of it made it into the book. Suffice it to say it will rewrite that part of the Beach Boys' story.  I also had the opportunity to interview Jodi and her memory, anecdotes, and personal insight into the band's history is absolutely remarkable.

That's awesome, Jim. I just drove by the former location of Pandora's Box last week (adjacent to the former location of the Virgin Megastore!), and of course naturally thought about The BBs playing at PB back in the day. I wonder if that's a photo of the interior of the place.

Yeah, we had it here as well: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,1990.msg314589.html#msg314589

There's also the one of Dennis and her that Jim mentioned.

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Glad you were able to get some good info from Jodi after I inspired her and Wes to post her info, about her meeting the BBs, on the Burbank site.
Did she provide any proof that the Olive Rec show actually took place? ( other than her memory of meeting them there)

Thanks for the info, Jim.  Really looking forward to your book!

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!
