Somewhere once upon time I read something about this, but I can't really recall...

Does anyone know any details about when and why Brian did this? I'm guessing that he was recommended to him to dye his hair to fit in with the "surfer" sun-bleached image by someone else. The only photo that I can think of is that famous color shot of the band (including David Marks) holding a surfboard.

According to Gaines (1988), Brian dyed his hair when Surfin' became a hit in order to look like a surfer, much to Audree's horror (p. 88).

Thanks, metal flake paint... I knew I'd read that somewhere. I just wonder if anyone has anymore info on the circumstances and such.

His hair sure looked more blonde in 1983. Landy's idea?

I dyed my hair orange one day after the bassist dyed his green and the drummer purple, and I figured I look stupid between them.

Looong, long ago! Cheesy

In a recent pic with Beck his hair looks pretty damn blonde. Thus:

I think it looks cool in 1962 shots. Well he so healthy and skinny looking that year so maybe that's it.

I'm sure it was blonde on July 4th 1990 when he played with the Beach Boys on Old Cape Cod at the Airforce base. Would be good to see a picture, as I remember being surprised at how it looked.

Yeah, they both seemed to have bleached their hair.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Lest we forget, Brian's all Hollywood.  Of course he dies his hair.  And has plastic surgery.  And does crazy stuff sometimes.

Wow, thank you Bittersweet for posting that link! Grin. I was 16 and playing soccer on tour in Boston (I'm from the UK) when I saw those news clips 25 years ago!  I couldn't believe I was about 45 minutes from where it had happened earlier in the day (gutted I missed it, I had heard adverts on the radio but didn't know where they were playing) and also shocked that Brian was there too.  I managed to see them the following year in Glasgow, UK (without Brian).

Interesting trivia about the 7/4/90 gig(s) that perhaps everybody here already knows: They were apparently Foskett's last shows with the band (until 2012/2014 of course).
