After the great Big Beat 1963 last year, an excellent, if a little loud, collection of stuff in the vein of the Copyright Extension releases, I was wondering if there was any likelyhood of a similar release this year - the thread for Big Beat 1963 was created 11th December, so there's still hope.
And what might be included! Let the speculation commence!
Oh, and PLEASE release it in the UK this time...

I'm guessing the tracks on any such putative release would date from between 1/1/64 and 12/31/64.

Cool! Thanks for the unofficial (or should I call it "official"?) confirmation, Craig!

weren't the copyright laws changed/extended recently so this kind of thing wouldn't have to happen?
i might be thinking of something else.

Yeah, to 70 years. I wondering how it affects unreleased stuff. I guess it's the same rules as for the released stuff, meaning we won't get anything. In 20 years, though, it's gonna be cool.

In 20 years it'll get extended again... Assuming McCartney isn't dead yet

The new copyright laws have changed the length to 70 years in Europe. However, this only protects published material. Anything unpublished is only protected for 50 years, and will need to be released to be protected. Once released, it will remain under copyright for another 20 years.

Ah, so that puts the potential for a new release this year back in the potential light!

That would be so cool. I am really hoping we see a release of 1964 material. Until the band realizes it should begin its own official Bootleg Series similar to Dylan's, this may be the closest we'll get to hearing some of these tracks. And I love that it happens right before Christmas. I wore out a few copies the THE BIG BEAT

Who knows? I hadn't heard of at least HALF the stuff on The Big Beat 1963, and a lot of it I had heard OF but never encountered, either on boots (that someone played for me, of course; not that I'd ever actually OWN a boot, because after all, it's illegal and you'll lose the war for the Allies if you own a bootleg) or on those weird gray-market compilations....

I think I need to put on The Big Beat now... seems like it'd go well with this rain in LA. RAIN! IN LA! Cars are swerving around uncontrollably below, totally confused at this phenomenon.

Plus, there could be studio sessions on the compilation as well. It's the sound recordings they're trying to protect, not necessarily the compositions.

So as these songs haven't made the copyright extension release, does that mean it's now open season on them?? Or might there be another download we don't know about yet?

Have any of them ever been booted though?

On our way through this "backstage" maze, Bruce joined up with the group and said hello, singing "It Never Rains in Southern California" and joking with some of the older ladies. I'm not sure if they knew he was a Beach Boy or simply an enthusiastic elderly gay gentleman.

That's precisely the point. I think part of the concern is that if material is freely circulating on boots, it could conceivably then be legally released without an official Capitol version. But if stuff is safe in the vaults, it might not be necessary. On the other hand, the tapes might just not exist.
