Last night on the Australian music quiz show Spicks And Specks they had a Beach Boys 'question'. They had to match up song title themes to the percentages in Beach Boys songs. Girls was 45%, Surfing was 32% and Cars were 23%. Most of you would agree this really isn't accurate. Someone once said that less than 10% of Beach Boys songs about surfing. I was thinking maybe they took songs from one compliation. If so which one?

Picture from the show:

P.S. At the end they had a harpist do a cover of 'God Only Knows'.

Wasn't going to post on this and your other new thread, on account of my self-imposed Break from posting. But the temptation's too great for this.

I can't believe I missed out on Spicks and Specks last night! I usually watch it, but I had a long day yesterday, and I chose to watch the new episode of Puberty Blues. Now I'm regretting not watching it!

I don't suppose they only focused on the Pre-Pet Sounds material, that could be why there is the obviously inaccurate results shown on the picture you posted  Roll Eyes

Was it a rerun from the old series with Adam, Myf and Alan or a new episode of the reboot Spicks and Specks?

Also, could you send me a link so I could watch that?

It was a new one with Josh, Ella and Adam. You can watch it on ABC iView.

They probably got the idea from this diagram that was all over the nets a few years ago.

I'm pretty sure it's even less than that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that 'Still Surfin'' from 'Summer in Paradise' is the only new song on a Beach Boys studio album after 'Surfer Girl' that's specifically about surfing. So that's one song on their last 25 albums and in the past 50 years of their career.

That percentage is definitely BS.  Especially without an "other" category.  Also the category "girls" is very general.  Pretty much any song remotely about love would fall under that criterion.

Funny that Dave Marks is the one obscured by the text overlay.

"Don't Back Down"
Do It Again is also basically about the beach/surfing and was inspired by a surfing trip to San Onofre.  Early versions of the song even have Mike sing "Get together and surf again", though I guess that doesn't count.

Hey Little Tomboy is creepy. Banging women by the pool is fun and conjures up warm summer thoughts a Beach Boys song should.

I think the question simply refers to song titles that do fall under those 3 categories. It's not necessarily saying that every BBs song is about cars, girls, and surfing... though it could lead one to believe exactly that.
