Steamboat. "yawn"

This song highlights Holland's biggest flaw. All the songs (with just one exception) sounds like it goes on for way too long. And this one is the worst example, mainly because it's also boring to the extreme and is hard to listen to without getting tired.

IMHO one of Denny's very worst songs. Only With You is far superior!

You surprise me on this. Steamboat is a masterpiece!

Only With You. Much prefer the POB bonus track version.

Leaving This Town is the only song on the album that is a bit too long. Carl and the Passions was worse with time lengths.

I actually quite like Leaving This Town. I'd say you're incorrect about CATP. Only one song is over 5 mins, and that's Cuddle Up. The only other songs that sound too long off CATP are Make It Good and Hold On Dear Brother, and they aren't that long.
With Holland on the other hand a lot of the songs are well over 5 mins, and with the exception of Sail On Sailor all the songs sound way too long. Steamboat is the worst in this cars for reasons I already stated

I like Leaving This Town too but IMO it is the only song on the album that is a bit too long. How is California, Only with You or Big Sur too long? To me Only With You is too short, I love the extended live version. (I'm voting for Only With You this round).

I meant that it feels too long, not that it actually is

You have your opinion, and I have mine. To me Steamboat is an utter snoozefest that seemingly rambles on forever.

I don't like every Dennis song, as supremely excellent as he was. He has his share of bad songs, as do virtually every other composer

Leaving this Town. Re: Steamboat vs. Only with You, I find the former is a truly unique and interesting Denny composition that manages to satisfy me in a different way than most of Denny's songs. Only with You, while pretty, is a tad nondescript and the type of song Denny could write in his sleep.

Just so you know, I think it was Mike Love who wrote the lyrics for Only With You

I disagree with every word of the above. I think the length of songs on Holland is absolutely spot-on and only the moog solo in Leaving This Town could be said to go on 'too long' (although I personally don't think it does).
There are however lots of songs on CATP which - whilst they might not actually be longer - certainly feel longer than anything on Holland, simply by having middle sections that seem to drag on from one uninspired section to the next.
Here She Comes and, especially, He Come Down are both very guilty of this. Trader may be longer than either of them, but it's structured to perfection (there's not a wasted second) whereas too many CATP songs just ramble.
(Bizarrely one of the few CATP songs that absolutely could not be accused of this - the shockingly brisk Make It Good, which seems to stop just as it's getting started - is one of the songs you single out as being too lengthy!)

I say it's all subjective. Some people may find it to feel too short, some may find it to feel too long, others may find it just right  Smiley

I don't like Steamboat for its lyrics, but for the atmosphere it creates.

Only With You. A good song but have heard this type of track from Dennis over and over. Outside of River Song, I'd say Steamboat is the most original thing he ever wrote.

I'm one of those few Freddie.  Carl and The Passions-"So Tough" is very much better than Holland.
.
That being said, Holland has some wonderful tracks.  "Steamboat" (like "River Song") is unique, and I hope it makes it to the finals.  "Trader" was more like two songs, and certainly not too long.  It was always a special part of live shows when Carl would set his guitar down to play piano.  "Only With You" Is a common Dennis type song.  He wrote a lot of love songs, and very well.  I love both versions.  I heard it by Carl first, so partial to the Holland version.  I posted my preference for the live "Leaving This Town" because I listen to it more often that way.  I'll give it a listen tonight.  One of the great things about participating in the Survivor Rounds, is that it gets me to listen to some of the albums, like Holland, I don't play too often all the way through instead of my comps and box sets.
.
One more thing before I vote.  Pixletwin, Thank You again for taking the time to do this.  This is much more than just a poll (and it's fun).  I hope when we get done with the albums, you'll consider doing the Box Sets.  At least GV and MiC.
.
