IMO the WTC story falls into the plausible just because Dennis was Dennis.

Plausible, yes... but as related, impossible.  Smiley

Dennis being Dennis......Probable! Cheesy

How does riding an elevator, open or not, make it "scaling"? Scaling implies rappelling with ropes and hooks.

Just two definitions of the word "scale".

1. To climb; ascend.

2. To rise in steps or stages.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I thought scales had to do with fish....

I suppose Dennis scaled the Twin Towers, with a fishing pole, then while the wind was blowing like mad up on top, he casted a line into the east river and caught a groper!!

Dennis could make miracles happen.  We should call him "St. Dennis of Hawthorne"!

 Cheesy

Just the 'scale' of the elevator system is impressive? To reach the top you had to take several rides.

Looking at this system it would be likely the last section would still have been a construction elevator in 1971.

Quick compromise: "to climb the steps in stages"

I've read pretty much every book on the Beach Boys over the years and most articles and reviews in magazines and newspapers and fanzines, and this thread is the first I've heard of Dennis and the WTC story. I must have missed it in Jon's Dennis book(?). Don't even remember discussing it here or on other message boards over the years. 'Course I'm sure there's a few stories that Jon and Ed are aware of that haven't made it to print.  Cheesy

As stated above, this one definitely made it to print back in November 2002 in the extensive MOJO magazine feature article on Dennis written by Ben Edmonds titled The Lonely Sea. And yeah, you are right...Ed's got a million of them that haven't made it to print, i've got a few too.  Evil

That's one I missed, and I never did pick up that issue!  Recognize the author's name as having written good articles in Creem and Rolling Stone, in addition to this essay on Dennis and POB:

There was a documentary released a few years ago about the first man to walk between the two towers on a tightrope.  I can tell you after watching the documentary, that the story may actually be correct... the guy int he documentary repeatedly talked about the months of work that he put into pulling it off, and made it quite clear several times that one building had tenants in the bottom of it, and the top floors were not finished and still open to the elements.

Basically the guy spent a month or two checking out the security and things (he got by security, repeatedly, by using crutches.  The guards would even hold the door open for him and not check for ID).  He hid a bunch of equipment (the tight rope, etc.) in one of the unfinished levels, then on the day of the walk he used a crossbow to shoot a line across to the other tower, where a friend of his pulled the rigging across, secured the tightrope, and filmed him walking across!  Incredible!

Too bad Dennis never appeared on an episode of Batman, doing a Batclimb with Adam West and Burt Ward.
