Maybe I Don't Know which I think should have been the single instead of Getcha Back.
Or better yet, a single instead of It's Gettin' Late.

I like It's Gettin' Late.  If the '85 album wasn't that great as a whole, it was a fine album for Carl.
It is a great album. Thanks to Carl. But Getcha Back was a perfect single, why Kokomo was a far bigger hit I will never understand.

Two words:  Tom Cruise

Some of the songs being mentioned have been on quite a number of compilations.

Eric, Wake the World showed up on "The Beach Boys Ballads" which, to the compiler/s's credit imho, also contained Friends and Be Still!

This is vinyl days I'm talkin', so unsure if Ballads ever made it to CD.

I don't know if Here Comes The Night (Wild Honey) has been released on a comp or not, but if not, that's definitely up there. One of my favorite Beach Boys songs and one of their most genuinely "funky" sounding tracks.

Definitely All I Wanna Do. It's weird that the guys have totally forgotten this one (except maybe Mike).

Fall Breaks And Back To Winter is one of my favorites too. I can see why they wouldn't rerelease this one, but it's brilliant.

I know H.E.L.P was never released and was on the GV box set, but I really love that track. I think it's 100% Brian and the "confessional" lyrics are so charming. Should be more well known even though it wasn't released until '93.

Here Comes the Night was on The Best of The Beach Boys vinyl from 1983 which went to number 1 in the U.K. I believe.

Well spotted! Love those 2 LPs.

For the record too, I have a really odd CD comp from Holland that has these tracks on it:

11) Let's Go Away For Awhile
12) I Know There's An Answer
19) Deirdre

I think "Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)" was on a 1968 compilation which had a very "odd" selection of tracks on it but it is a song that I thought was sorely missed on both the GV boxset and MIC.  Correct me if it has shown up elsewhere in more recent years!  It is truly a beautiful piece of music.

"Lonely Sea" all the way.

Lonely Sea was included on MIC.  As it should have been.

Has "Here Today" ever been on a compilation?
Too many compilations leave out "Dance, Dance, Dance". Even one compilation that leaves it out is too many, and I think there are several of them.

But Getcha Back was a perfect single, why Kokomo was a far bigger hit I will never understand.

Because Kokomo was in that movie. Had Kokomo been on '85 and Getcha Baclk in that movie, "Getcha Back" would have been the hit. That is, I think so, of course we'll never know.

Shocked I'm not a big fan of "what if" scenarios, but that's a doozy! There may be an alternative universe where Cocktail never happened but Herbie:Fully Loaded was an international smash.

I'm sorry, I'm not good enough in English to understand what you mean with that... me no native English speaker.

If we’re talking any compilation albums here, not just BB compilations. . .

Warner/Reprise issued a long series of “Loss Leaders” LPs throughout (mostly) the 1970s, which included a number of BB songs you may not find elsewhere.  Pick ‘em out on this link: http://www.dustbury.com/music/wblist.html#start

What?  You don’t have time?  Fine, I don't mind doing all the work.  Smiley

Smiley DOOZY is a noun for something that's outstanding or unique, within it's type. Usually gets equated with challenging or difficult items - eg, that's a doozy of an equation.  Some may use it as an antonym for doddle or piece of cake (an easy task)

Doozy and Humdinger (if you're across that one) are close cousins.

So, me describing your notion that if Getcha Back were on Cocktail was expressing appreciation for you throwing out an interesting idea - imo

Thank you Al for your explanation, now I get it - I'm flattened! Er, flattered I think it is. Wink 2 Language has so many subtile facets, if you're not in a certain language on a daily basis, you can't know them all. For instance, I didn't get the drug language in "Somewhere near Japan" either.

This would almost be easier to just list the same ~20 songs that are on every BB comp. Then you would have your answer
