Any order or lineup's fine with me, as long as it doesn't include "Cuckoo Clock".  God, I hate that song.
Come to think of it, I'd rather not hear "Chug A Lug" again, either - so toss that turkey, as well.
And "Surfin'" sucks all sped up the way it is on the LP...so leave it off, or fly in the original-speed master.
I'm all set now.

Thanks to Craig for being a mature adult and keeping the thread on topic. Anyone who continues this behavior with Surfer is going to be banned. Tread lightly.

As far as my ideal order for the album, I don't think I could really do much to make the album any better, short of axing Cuckoo Clock and maybe adding Cindy Oh Cindy in its place.

Well, I think Surfin' Safari should be left just as it is. Switch anything and it becomes something else completely - a compilation.

For the best take on people's view of Surfin' Safari, you couldn't do much better than checkout the Surfin' Safari Survivor thread on which a good number of board members spent several weeks sifting through the album to effectively create a chart if their favourite tracks, discussing the pros and cons of each along the way:

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,16168.0.html

Apologies for rising to the bait.

Edit: I did a quick search and found this useful thread, which by chance was on the exact same topic:

http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,16350.msg400899.html#msg400899

I hope that helps… two threads, same subject… great minds think alike, eh!

What's with the lack of love for Cuckoo Clock?!
I would exclude Ten Little Indians, HYW, and Summertime Blues and replace them with Cindy Oh Cindy and The Lonely Sea

I definitely think Cindy should have been added to the album.  I also think they should have added or rerecorded Judy and Karate for this as well.

Just master Surfin' at the right speed and I'd be satisfied.

...but an album/track food relation thread could be fun  Afro

Y'knowwhat, Rockno1fann is right - take "Ten Little Indians" off my list, too. Ethnically and musically offensive.  But leave "Summertime Blues"! Granted, nowhere near as good as Cochran's or The Who's versions, but typical of the garage-band style the early BBs had going. Replace with "Cindy" and "Baker Man".

Put a track recorded in March 1963 on an album released in October 1962 ? How, exactly ?

Through the magic of digital post-production.  Smiley  I figure if it's a bonus track on the CD twofer, it's fair game. Smiley

"The Lonely Sea" and "Land Ahoy" could have been included on SURFIN' SAFARI.

How funny you should ask...yesterday I spent a bit of time comparing all the various CD releases of the song, so assuming the CDs were mastered with the tapes playing at the correct speed, it appears the master for the original Candix/X single was sped-up by one semitone (a half-step, from the key of G to the key of A flat), and that change was retained by Capitol for the "Surfin' Safari" album.

Yes...put "Landy Ahoy" on my list, I'd forgotten about that one...but I'm not sure I'd use "Loney Sea" simply because my "Surfin' U.S.A." lineup would be short one song.  Yes, we're entering the land of little logic now.  Smiley

Thankfully, for me, it's easy.  I love everything about this album.  So I'd leave it the way it is.  I like the way it is.

When I started buying Beach Boy albums, proper -- after the Greatest Hits left me wanting more -- this was the second album I got.  First was Smiley Smile, of all things.  (That's a whole 'nother topic).  I had heard Surfin' USA, borrowed from a friend, but Surfin' Safari was my second album purchase.

I didn't like it too much.  It reminded me a lot of the first album I bought, Smiley Smile.  It was simple.  It was goofy.  It was raw.  It was amateurish.

Short story long, I like it.  Because it is odd.  And slightly "off."  Cuckoo, Ten Little Indians.  It's delightfully odd.

Bean, you have brought up an interesting point. The odd humor on Surfin Safari is the same as on Smiley Smile. Just the BBs have discovered weed and reddi-whip in the meantime.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591
