Very good interview altho David Leaf did most of the talking.. There was a time and it wasn't that long ago that BW could have done the interview and done most of the talking..BW can be articulate when he wants to be .. GOD bless Brian Wilson..

I would've liked to have heard Brian talk more too, but yeah it was still a good interview.

These categorizations might work If it was 1963 and we were all a bunch of 12 year old girls clutching tear soaked pictures of our favourite beach boy.

What has caused David Leaf to be persona non grata in Brian's eyes? Just a case of Brian moving on to a new "flavor of the week?"

I could be wrong but I was under the impression David was always in Brian"s inner circle ..Ive read that he may go a few month"s without seeing him but there has never been a blow out between the two..   Any other info?

I may (happily) be wrong here….a little internet digging seems to indicate that David Leaf & Brian are still friends, but that David is working on non BB-related projects at the time, which may explain his lack of presence in recent liner note projects

Did Brian really have THE major breakdown just before smile?  I thought the story was Melinda picked him up at the hospital and asked him where he wanted to eat and he was ready to go.   And  that business about the single use of acid? It's like Brian gets nervous in these interviews and just says anything to get on with it.  I think a big part of his problem is fear which has, at times come out as paranoia during times of stress and drug use.   and of course there have been the auditory hallucinations mentioned over the years during episodes of psychosis......or psychosis secondary to mood disorder.   Tough guy to assess, not knowing al of the facts.   for sure, he is not the confident self assured young man who at one time spoke for the entire band and record company in countless interviews back inthe early days.   He is damaged, but he is a survivor.  I think that is why he has such a loyal and loving following.

When Brian gets asked a question like "Is there anything you would change" and he answers with "the chorus in 'Sloop John B,'" is that a joke? Or does he really not understand what Charlie Rose is asking?

I'veheard him do this onother interviews.   He kept doing this on the Terry Gross fresh I air interview a fw years ago.  I think the pace of interviews forces him to answer more quickly than he is comfortable.  he asked if he disliked the beachboys being known as an oldies act, trying to draw him out about his interest in in evolving his music beyond the surf and car themes.  His response was no, he loved the oldies songs, really liked the old stuff.  He misunderstood the intent of the question.

Me to in other interviews and I expected a deeper answer to that question..Ya know what I think.?  I think he does that on purpose to not give a negative answer and dwell on the past and bad stuff.. He has his issues and to stay well he has to be positive. Whats he gonna say: Yea get rid of my father .. wish Dennis + Carl were still here. Never do ACID ever..  Never do coke or speed or heroin. . Don't believe in all the  genius hype.. Been a better father..  etc etc.. All that stuff flashes thru his brain + then he goes.. Change the chorus to sloop john b..   IMHO without ever having a long conversation with him I think this is what he is doing .. Protecting himself in some way.. BW may be damaged but I will never buy he is stupid or derainged  or wasted.. He is smarter than we all think.. Does anybody understand this or agree ? And if you want the depressing answer Bw already did that on Mike Douglas show 1976..

With a very few exceptions, Brian hates doing interviews, thus he'll say pretty much anything to get them over and done with (golden rule #1 when interviewing Brian: never, ever ask any questions that can be answered with "yes"or "no", because he will). On the very rare occasions he feels comfortable, or the interviewer has done their homework, he can open up spectacularly.
