What is the difference with these alternate versions on the MIC Box?  I know that Meant For You is extended but is the shortened mix on Friends the same till the fade?

It's Over Now sounds like the same mix...just fuller and slower.

Meant for You: As far as my ears can tell the original edit is the same up till the fade EXCEPT that the MIC version is missing the initial organ notes.

It's Over Now: The mix on MIC goes at a faster speed than the mix on the GV box.

Meant For You doesn't start with the same organ either - Mike starts it rather than an organ on MIC. The track is also remixed stereo wise pre-fade.

It's Over Now is just a new mix ['fuller' maybe, but Marilyn is quieter, but was always too loud too me] and it's faster, not slower. Well, technically it's the right speed - original mix was slowed down for some absurd reason.

The organ...I forgot all about that.  Thanks.

I really, really like the extended "Meant For You" - it just feels so bizarre (in a good way), and the "puppy" and "pony" lyrics seem almost psychedelic and Smiley Smile-esque in their seeming randomness.

I've tried to conceptualize what the "puppy" and "pony" lyrics mean in relation to the title of the song and Mike's sung lyrics at the start/end of the song... at first glance, I thought they seemed almost unconnected... as though Mike's lyrics were a boy-girl love type of thing, vs the random "puppy" and "pony" lyrics sung by Brian.

But then I thought about it... Maybe this is over-thinking it, but does anyone else think that with the extended lyrics, the whole "meant for you" lyric concept was intended to be referring to love in one's heart for friends/siblings/parents, and how that was related through (admittedly slightly out-of-left-field) lyrics about parents/siblings of puppies and ponies? And how animals have the same (universal with humans) type of love for each other?

Of course, that totally changes the theme/meaning of the edited Friends LP version of the song. That's my take on it, anyhow.

I don't think it's specifically about love of a significant other or specifically about love of a family member or friend, it's probably about both. The "you" in "These feelings in my heart are meant for you" are probably just meant to be whomever comes to mind when you hear that.

Technically, "It's Over Now" on MIC is a vintage alternate, as opposed to new, mix.

Will the online sessionography indicate which tracks are vintage mixes and which are recent, or for the box ?

And if not, why not ?  Grin

"absurd reason" = Mark Linnet years ago when someone asked him about it swore up and down that he mastered "It's Over Now" on Good Vibrations at the exact speed that the tape box said.

My guess? The backing track was recorded in F#. After that, the tape speed was written on the box.

Later, Carl and Marilyn recorded their vocals, but had the tape sped up a bit to G so that Marilyn could hit her notes. Nothing further was noted as per what the proper mastering speed is.

This makes sense to me, as Brian's demo is also in F#...

I absolutely love this version of "Meant For You".  The harmonies are beautiful after Brian does his part.  The only thing I like about this version of "It's Over Now" are the strings.  They're right there in this mix.  But I still prefer the slower speed, even if it is "wrong".

Me, too.  But the longer it's taking, the better it's becoming - meaning, more complete and more accurate - so I think it'll be worth it. Hopefully so will everyone who reads it!  My master plan is to have it finished & available to read online right around the Christmas ordering rush, so that manifold potential gift shoppers will see it while surfing (the 'net) and become so enthralled with the captivating story of the Beach Boys' music that they order MIC for the music fan in their lives, and it becomes a million-plus seller by New Years!   Cool Guy

I recently dug out my GV box set and found the slowed version of It's Over Now to be unlistenable now.  I much prefer the MIC version over it.

In my opinion the extended Meant For You is freaking beautiful!

This is on Wikipedia:

Some previously bootlegged unreleased material was left off the compilation due to the group being uncomfortable with its contents. Of them, they were "Stevie" (a 1981 Brian Wilson composition allegedly written about Stevie Nicks), "My Solution" (a Halloween-themed recording made on October 31st, 1970 about a mad scientist), "Carry Me Home" (a Dennis Wilson song containing the lyrics "please God don't let me die"), "Thank Him" (a solo 1963 Brian Wilson demo), and "Walkin'" (a late-1960s Brian Wilson song with an abandoned vocal take).

Can we assume then that all of these were seriously considered for the box, and if so what were the exact reasons for the exclusion of each?

I can picture BW being embarrassed about "Stevie", if only in terms of the lyrics. Too bad, it's a huge favorite of mine. When I first heard it I couldn't believe it was written and recorded at such a low point in the man's career, so I initially assumed it was a remake or a cover version. His songs on KTSA weren't even half as good as far as I'm concerned.

No.  If you look at the source that came from, a Mark L., Alan B., and Dennis Wolfe interview in Rock Cellar Magazine, you'll see.  The interviewer asks "What songs have fans been petitioning to be included that didn't make the final cut on the box set?", which is kind of a leading question that can be interpreted as meaning some titles were on an early draft lineup, but didn't make the final round.  Alan and Mark go on to discuss several specific titles that fans had been lobbying for, probably from one of the discussions on this board...but that doesn't mean they were submitted to the band members for approval and were nixed at that level.  In fact, they weren't.  There were a couple of things that were proposed and dropped, but nothing that fans have really been asking for, and definitely not any of the titles mentioned.  None of those were given serious consideration, for the reasons Alan and Mark indicate in the interview - one of these reasons being that, in some cases, but not necessarily all, they know the group is, or would be, uncomfortable with including them, based probably on previous conversations.  But to say they were proposed for this box set but voted down by the band members is inaccurate.  Below are the links - be sure to check out both pages (I didn't see a link to Page 2 on Page 1).  What might be of special interest (and apologies if this has already been posted or discussed here) is this quote from Mr. Boyd regarding "Wouldn't It Be Nice To Live Again":

<<We played the song for Mike (Love) and he really liked it and was really supportive of it being included.  As a matter of fact, Mike was talking about how one of his dream projects would be a box set with one disc highlighting each of the group members’ strongest moments over the years, which is incidentally something that Mark (Linett) has been wanting to do for many years too.>>
