If you listen to the original song, Carl sings it almost in a spoken-word format... very beautiful because Carl had a very beautiful speaking voice.  I thik Brian's trying to do something similar and get that whisper quality on it.

The kind of common line on Brian is that he just shows up and goes with the motion, then leaves.  If he's specifically singing this song in that style (and doing a pretty good job of it) that shows a lot more involvement than some assume.
