Thank you for the wonderful SMiLE sessions box, the wonderful 50th tour, TWGMTR, and the fabulous Made in California with all the wonderful unreleased tracks and remixes.  Also the stereo mixes of Today and Smiley Smile! It has been a wonderful time to be a Beach Boys fan. I am thankful for all that we have and if the Beach Boys call it quits and nothing else gets released, I can say that compared to 10 years ago we have gotten more than we could have imagined!

However, I do have 3 Christmas wishes St Nick. If we have been good Beach Boys fans:

1. Summer Days/Nights (stereo mix)
2. Wild Honey (stereo mix)
3. Sunflower (quadraphonic suround sound)

Thank you St Nick and merry summer to you!

Sincerely,

Magic Transistor Radio

1. Summer Days/Nights (stereo mix)

Released last year! Smiley

2. Wild Honey (stereo mix)

Sadly, this one isn't possible. I forget the finer details but I gather the multitracks for several songs are incomplete.

Why does everyone hate the mono sound of Wild Honey but me? Smiley

Some of the released versions have missing parts as well ... like the Chamberlin on 'Country Air' and the organ on 'Let the Wind Blow'

I much prefer the mono on everything through '68, and some after.

I don't think most folks here "hate" mono, it's just cool to get a different experience out of something you love.

Is it just me or does most stereo stuff sound really shitty up until the very late 60's? Esp when listening on headphones. Very wide left/right separation, ghostly, echoey vocals, Layers of backing tracks flattened and pushed back to the point of being inaudible - the list goes on.

Well I can certainly understand that. I still think Wild Honey sounds great though...just listened to it on headphones...cool vibe.

Mike's Beard, I think I agree with you about 1960s music in stereo.

Are we talking the old Chuck Britz stereo mixes, newer stereo mixes, the Friends and 20/20 albums, wat?

I wasn't singling out The Beach Boys with that post, just plenty of 60's rock/pop stuff in stereo in general.

I love mono in general, but I have to admit modern stereo mixes are way better than the 60s ping pong stereo.

The sound of the WH mono is a bit... failed. It would be great if it could be remixed in MONO with better equipment! Cheesy

There are so many cool things going on in the title track but unfortunately most are buried in the dense mono mix.  I recently isolated 7 distinct tracks from the Unsurpassed Masters sessions and hope to create a wide stereo mix that brings them out more clearly while retaining the feel of the original single.  In my opinion the new mix on 50 Big Ones (which I assume is the same mix as on MIC) is awful, sounding more like "reprocessed mono" than true stereo.

Not me. I always - always - prefer everything in mono. It just sounds more full - to me, stereo sounds thin and tinny. I know everyone's been raving about Country Air on MIC but I'm afraid it doesn't hold a candle to the WH album version...

The Pet Sounds stereo mix I love, possibly because it was done on tape, through vintage equiptment.

These new stereo mixes though, collapsing under the weight of software plugins, no thanks, I'll stick with my Past Masters.
