So is Shut Down, Deuce Coupe, and 409 which are good classic car songs.

But if it's another Drivin' or PT Cruiser, I'll pass.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Don't Worry Baby is not a car song in the same sense as Little Deuce Coupe et. al. If we have one of those, we're f***ed.

It's pretty clear Mike isn't the only one not "fucking with the formula."

This means that Brian can no longer carry an album or tour on his own. Otherwise, he wouldn't need other lead singers. On the other hand, Brian can't really tour the way Mike's Beach Boys do, over 100 dates a year. So, maybe, the Brian brand of Beach-Boys-not-Beach-Boys is a win/win for him. He gets to have people helping him out on vocals, helping him out on production (Joe Thomas), and he can tour and have a career that brings the Beach Boys experience to the fans in his own way.

I'm sure it will be closer to the latter two. Brian's last car song, "Desert Drive," was a complete lyrical disaster.

By that logic, That's Why God Made the Radio wasn't a Beach Boys album either.

Nah. There is a huge difference between the contribution made by Carl, Dennis and Mike to the Beach Boys than there is to the contribution made by Blondie and Ricky.

Brian, Al and David all appeared on Drivin' I think. That didn't make it a Beach Boys song.

Its not subject matter that makes a song good or bad.

I would argue the same about any band that lacks a Wilson or Jardine.

Regardless, the OP didn't say that Brian's group should even be called the BBs. Only that it's the true continuation of the C50 tour for Brian. Which looks to be true enough.

Of course Mike and Bruce aren't really The Beach Boys. That goes without saying.

Nice to hear Al is singing lead on the album.  Sounds like it might be a Brian Wilson album in name only, this is the next Beach Boys album.  Now, some might argue with that saying Mike needs to sing on it in order for it to be a Beach Boys album but my point is that while Mike and Bruce have drifted to tour on their own, it seems Brian, Al, and Dave have never ceased to be a band since the reunion ended.  It's not the reunion ended so Brian went back to his solo career, the reunion never ended, it's just that a couple of guys backed out of it.  This album is THE follow-up to That's Why God Made the Radio and I couldn't be more excited.

I would argue that without 4 of the most recognizable Beach Boys it ain't The Beach Boys.

What about Summer In Paradise? No Brian or Dennis. Their two most recognizable members.

Not a Beach Boys album to me.

How about you Nicko??

Well as that was only missing 2 of the main six Beach Boys at that point I'm presuming that you agree with me that an album missing 4 of those 6 guys certainly isn't a Beach Boys album.

And while SIP technically has the group's name on it, I don't think it captured the essence of the group. Just as Brian's solo album couldn't (though doubtless it will be superior).

You know, way back when, many of us became fans of The Beach Boys due to the surf and drag songs. As Mikie stated above, if it is of a quality such as Shut Down etc., then I welcome it. I keep forgetting that many here are not fans from the beginning. It amazes me that so many dislike the music that made them a top tier rock band.

I agree with those saying that people should give the car song a chance. The song's content is much more important than its theme.

I like many (most) of the car songs they did in the early 60s, I'm not a snob about that era of their music and I know it is vital to what came after. However, this is just not what I want to be hearing from Brian and Al at this point in their career. The track could be very good, and I'm trying not to dismiss it before I hear it, I'd just rather have an album full of more....uh, age appropriate material from the guys at this point. So far I'm getting a GIOMH feeling from what's happening here, and I would LOVE to be proven wrong.

It can't be that bad. I don't think Brian's management would be stupid enough to let that happen again even if Brian was not really engaged (not that I'm suggesting that is the case).

You're over thinking this thing. Even with one more car song, just think how many love songs he has written. Would it bother you if he wrote another?

You know, there's nothing like dropping the top on a convertible on a warm summer day, turning the stereo up full blast,  and cruising the highway to wherever you find your joy. That kind of enjoyment is not limited to youth. If it was, the car shows I go to would be populated by teenagers instead of guys and gals my age, and the beaches would not be prime family vacation destinations.

I love the car songs and the beach songs. Bring 'em on!

I think it is funny. He's still pissed that Mike ended things on schedule. They will all get back together again, count on it.

Considering what Mike has done to Al over the years, Al calling Mike "the other day" really isn't the worst he could be saying.

A few "Pet Sounds" shows in 2016 would be my guess.  A quick money grab for all five before they again run back to their respective camps.

It seems like Brian's actually into this record, he's taking his time about it, there is more than one singer on this album as opposed to GIOMH. Al seems genuinely excited about this record, as does Jeff Beck.

I really dislike Desert Drive from GIOMH - so I see where you're coming from. I have nothing against them doing a car song - if it's done right. At a stretch, Pacific Coast Highway is kind of a car song - and that was unbelievably good.

At this point in Brian's career, I think he's looking for a grand slam - something to make the Lovester jealous Grin, something to please his hardcore fans (hence he's bringing back Blondie, the apparent smile-esque songs), and something to please the public (the pop songs, having Al, Dave, and Brian on the record).

I think this record is going to kick some ass, and I can't wait to hear it!

I think they're feigning discontent because there is no story without conflict. Keeps them in the news in the lull between new product. Builds momentum for forthcoming work. Builds anticipation for another reconciliation. Classic Hollywood hype.
