Obviously, Pet Sounds was incredibly influential from the time of its release. But in the United States, it wasn't a massive hit. In another thread, someone said that by 1983 it was out of print. Additionally, the Endless Summer album and mid-70s resurgence of 60s material seemed not to focus on Pet Sounds material (and certainly not much released afterwards).

So has the reputation and popularity of Pet Sounds evolved over time? Specifically, what has that evolution looked like? At what point (in your mind) did the album receive near-universal acclaim and reverence?
