Read Jon and Ian's book I am surprised by a few of the things in the sets. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow in 1977, Celebrate The News in 1971, It's Over Now, I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, and The Night Was So Young on the boxset tour in 1993. Anybody hear these?

I'm surprised that they didn't mention Big Sur being performed at the Hartford 1973 concert!

Wish I'd caught a box-set concert. Looking forward to hearing some of this on MIC.

I wonder who sang lead on I Just Wasn't Made for These Times.  I can't picture anybody but Brian singing that, not that Al or Carl couldn't do it justice but it's just such a personal song.

I attended the Valley Forge Music Fair show in Devon, PA back in 1993 and do not recall any of those three songs performed that day.

...It's Over Now, I Just Wasn't Made For These Times, and The Night Was So Young on the boxset tour in 1993.

None of those songs were performed in the Atlanta '93 boxset show. I was there and took setlist notes.

They actually played It's Over Now in concert??? Are you sure about that? I don't doubt the credibility of Ian or Jon, I'm just really surprised by that. You'd think it would have been mentioned on this board before.

To back that up: it's not on the recording (bootleg) of the show, either.

Regarding those songs allegedly performed: Ian's and Jon's book quotes an unnamed "contributor to Beach Boys Stomp" who was present at the November 21 show. It's that guy who reports a "fabulous Carl lead on 'It's Over Now'" as well as "The Night Was So Young" being played and Al singing "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times".

They didn't sing it at the test box set show in Chicago that fall either. That's why I was asking about them and the others.

Speaking of songs that were rarely performed live, I swear to God that I have heard a recording of a live performance of The Beaks Of Eagles. But for the life of me, I can't remember where or when it happened. I'm thinking that it was a circa 1972-73 concert. I don't think it was a dream. At least I hope it wasn't just a dream. It seems so vivid in my mind. I mean, I can even remember that the sound quality wasn't all that great. Is there any small shred of evidence that this actually happened or exists on tape? Or have I finally well and truly gone batshit insane?  Huh  Huh

I've never heard about it being performed, but anything is possible. I'm going to check the 1972/73 chapters in The Beach Boys In Concert, maybe it's listed there. Or maybe someone else is faster and actually knows the answer. Wink

I was at the Brandeis University (Massachusetts) show and they didn't play those either. I don't have the new book yet, but which box set shows did they play those songs at?
Edit: Ok, I reread a prior post and said November 21. I beleive the show I saw was a week later

I have t got that far in the book, but that really gives me something to look forward to!

That's cool Celebrate the News was performed in concert…I feel like it was performed in a tv appearance with Breakaway.

I wonder who took the small Marilyn vocal on Its Over Now? I feel like I heard that Al performs lead on IJWMFTT.

The only time I've heard of The Night Was So Young performed live was when Brian was doing it at some Pet Sounds shows in early 2000s, when he was doing request per the BlueBoard…not saying they didn't perform it at the mentioned concerts. Btw, if you can get your hands on those records, take a listen, they're such good setlists! I remember Busy Doin Nothin and Melt Away being performed famously!

I think the 11/21 show circulates, and none of those songs are on it. I don't think any of these were ever peformed. Al sang "You Still Believe In Me", maybe they mixed that one up. The other two, I have no idea how they thought of those songs. No evidence from any extant setlists or recordings, including tour rehearsals.

In fact, Eric's setlist archive lists it as the MOST bootlegged of any of the 1993 Unplugged shows:

As far as celebrate the news, the fairfield university review i have states that it was played. It was the first date of the tour and dennis was singing two or three numbers at shows in that period. According to the article he completed I've got a friend that day at the venue.  So possibly the plan was to perform celebrate every night but dennis decided he preferred I've got a friend

Yep, I've definitely heard the Valley Forge show. Up until the surfacing of the 11/26 NYC soundboard, it was the most common and best-sounding recording.

I'm pretty sure the group of "rarities" added during that run of shows late in the year to promote the GV set remained unchanged, with the exception of "Little Saint Nick" being added a few dates in, and it's of course debatable whether that was really part of the "rarities" or just a seasonal thing.

I know where this story originated... I once spent some time with a close associate of Brian's that lived in the Valley Forge area. He was the one that swore they played those three songs, despite audio evidence and accounts of multiple other attendees to the contrary. But his status in the Brian Wilson camp caused his account to be taken as fact and published in several fanzines.

Thanks for clarifying, Lee. I remember reading that and being surprised that I had never heard of that. So now that we know it's false, I'm just wondering why someone around make something up like that...I see absolutely no benefit in it

In the very best case, those songs were maybe played over the PA system before the shows in 1993, if even that.
