it sounds like Brian is singing harmony on the Sunrays version.
and i agree the Carpenters would sound great singing this one.
Could be him just mixed down, but the word at the time it came out was that only Dennis was on it. When the Brian and Carl version came out on Get The Boot it was surprising they were even there.
