At a songwriters awards show in 1986. He was introduced at this show by songwriters Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg (Like a Virgin, True Colors) who were then writing with Brian in a Landyized ill-fated attempt to make Brian relevant.  Not, however, his first "solo gig". That would have been a May 1985 Malibu ER benefit where Brain did approximately 5 songs, including male Ego, I'm So Lonely, California Girls and  Sloop John B.

Or if you want to stretch it, he had a solo gig even before that as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live (with a teenage Jodie Foster hosting) in 1976.  He looked uncomfortable but he did a pretty cool solo piano version of "Good Vibrations."  He also sang pretty unspectacular renditions of "Back Home" and "Love is a Woman" with backing from the house band.

He even showed up in one of the skits as a security guard, which was odd.

He even delivered a line, poorly.

He was also out there at the end of the show with the cast, looking out of place.  Gilda Radner noticed this and started to do a waltz-like dance with him and he responded eagerly.

It was very uncomfortable to watch. His legs were literally shaking during the skit.

He's very verbose here. The old Brian.  The real damage seemed to have happened between here and '91. So was the mis-prescription of drugs already happening by this point? Was it a cumulative thing or had it not yet started?

I have heard it was indeed happening, but certainly not to the extent it would in the early 90's when the conservatorship battle began.

My god! So it was a case of "If I can't have him, no one can" Truly sickening.

EDIT: There is a very sweet moment during the end credits where Brian dances with Gilda Radner.

I don't know that to be the case, it is just what I have heard from sources. The visual evidence would seem to give that theory support, however.

Thanks!  I'll have to wait until I get back to the U.S. to watch it, though.
