So this phrase was in the popular lexicon prior to the song? Or just a coincidence?

I don't know if it was ever a patented "phrase," necessarily. I don't if it's one today. Repeating a word for emphasis is just a common trick. That's all that I believe is happening in these cartoons. I don't think the song "Fun, Fun, Fun" has influenced many people saying it today. It's just a triple emphasis thing, and "fun" is an easy word to do it with.
