The Beach Boys vs. The Beatles

Guess who's winning this poll by an overwhelming percentage?
The Beatles...
Some pretty ignorant comments on here too, including this one, and more!
"This is just moronic. Beatles vs. Beach boys? Filet mignon vs. Spam"
The Beatles are obviously wonderful, and deserve much praise, I just wish the general population would listen a little more.
There would be a lot less terror in the world if more people listened to The Beach Boys.

it's a bit stupid the whole deal... they are simply trying to make something happen on their webpage.
also the Beach Boys dont quite fit into the ultra-masculin nature of a music page with the daft name "Ultimate Classic Rock" which invokes sad images such a this:
http://www.barnyardtheatre.co.za/images/shows/main229.jpg
Also the heading " The Beatles Vs. The Beach Boys –
Ultimate Classic Rock Hall of Fame Round One
" speaks volumes of what kind of toff this is and who the audience who go around praising the 'rock gods' or what else.
Also how arbitrary isn't the selection? Why not Stones vs Beatles? or Kinks vs Rolling Stones.
Only one word sums up this type of poll: stupor
BTW didnt mean this to bash the audience of the webpage, just those who make it. Anyway don't really see why I should care. They all made great music as well as crap music.

Yeah, I agree it's all silly.
But I also think the Beach Boys are the most overlooked band maybe ever.
It's just sad.
I'm sure The Beatles will win though.
Do they ever lose?

I will always LIKE The Beach Boys more than The Beatles. Ditto The Rolling Stones over the Fab Four.
Objectively speaking, The Beatles will always stand as the greatest rock group that ever existed. Any band that gets into an _______ vs The Beatles will lose.
Having said that, SMiLE is infinitely more creative than SGT PEPPER IMO. SGT PEPPER - "Hey let's go music hall Victorian whimsy. Then put on a show." That's the concept behind PEPPER. Wow, didn't Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney put on a show at MGM in 1939? Brian's teenage symphony to God, abstract Americana, etc, will always float my boat more so than SGT PEPPER. *
Having said THAT, I kinda dig REVOLVER more than PET SOUNDS.
As a singles band, The Beach Boys might actually have been better than The Beatles 1962-67. But as much as I like "Darlin", "Friends", "Do It Again", "I Can Hear Music", "Break Away", "Cotton Fields" and "Add Some Music to Your Day", this nice string of 45s is surpassed by "Lady Madonna", "Hey Jude/Revolution", "Get Back", "Ballad of John & Yoko", "Come Together/Something" and "Let It Be."
* Per the Grammy Awards, the best engineered album of 1967 was not SGT PEPPER but Elvis Presley's HOW GREAT THOU ART. But Elvis versus The Beatles is another thread!

During my high school years (1980-84) and beyond, I went around preaching the gospel of The Beach Boys. It's not that Brian & Co were unpopular, just that nobody except me seemed to know them beyond the big hits. I have managed to make some converts over the years but over time resigned myself to the fact that that's the way it is.
It must be said The Beach Boys did not help their cause in this regard during this era. Absurdly conservative playlists, forgetting that album like FRIENDS, SUNFLOWER, SURF'S UP, HOLLAND ever existed, tacky presentations, etc.
The situation has been rectified somewhat since the 1993 box. And today, a new fan can buy a comp like 50 BIG ONES and hear "Surfin' Safari" and "Surf's Up" in the same listening experience/context. But they skipped "409" and "Be True to Your School"! Sorry but "All This Is That" should have stayed on the shelf!

Ultimate Classic Rock is an interesting site/magazine...and I don't really know why they are even talking about The Beach Boys it doesn't fit 90% of their other stories. As mentioned above, they are more heavily focused on 70's & 80's classic rock and their readers are more slanted towards that which The Beatles are closer to, I suppose.

It would be interesting to find out whether the people who voted for The Beatles are familiar with The Beach Boys' catalogue beyond
Sounds of Summer
. My guess is that they aren't.
On the other hand, I suspect that the majority of the people who voted for The Beach Boys are familiar with The Beatles' entire catalogue.

Really?
Obviously I class myself as a big fan of The Beach Boys but in some respects I think that the band have maybe been fortunate that their reputation has remained so high over the years. The reason I say that is because I don't think the group have done a 'really' good album since 1973. The vast majority of stuff that they have released since then has been substandard.
Plus, many of those early albums contain far too much filler. Even Today (otherwise an excellent album) has Bull Session.
I can understand why for many people the group are just about the greatest hits and Pet Sounds (with the myth of Smile).

Yeah, they're totally justified in dismissing Today as trash because of one spoken word track at the end of the album.

How is an album that has been described as, 'otherwise excellent' being dismissed as 'total trash'?

I meant more in the sense of the general public not knowing much at all from the 67-73 period, which is obviously full of wonderful material. I don't even think their total album sales have been calculated in ages. I think it's safe to say they're somewhat overlooked, especially with such a long and productive career.

Yeah, that I can understand. It's unfortunate for the group that some of their best work of that time like Sunflower didn't sell and contained no hits whereas some of the early big sellers were much lesser albums and contained too much filler.

The Beatles had a distinct advantage over the Beach Boys-they never had a real clown in the group who dressed in flowing robes, sandals, turbans with white feathers and purple tights. The red beard didn't help with the image thing either. mYke luHv was looked upon by many as a complete baboon.

I know people who don't really know The Beach Boys that well, but dislike what they do know. And I know people who checked out some of the "deeper" albums and decided that it just wasn't their cup of tea. But when was the last time you heard someone say "Well, I really gave 'The Smile Sessions', 'Today' and 'Sunflower' a chance, but those albums are just terrible"?
