Writing lyrics and working on vocal melodies is a very important job, a big element of a great song. Do people think Bernie Taupin and Robert Hunter aren't songwriters just because they are lyricists?

I should have specified, Mike WAS a good songwriter. But since endless summer, his attempts to recapture a surf culture that he has long moved on from have been embarrassing. Its OK was the last great "fun in the sun" song and lead from Mike.

Yeah, and Eric Clapton has been horrible since 1972. Lots of artists lose it, utterly. I still believe in giving those folks due respect. They gave the world more joy than you and I ever will.
People should think of Mike as a weird combination of Johnny Rotten and Engelbert Humperdinck. He doesn't make sense.

I guess part of my Mike bashing comes from the fact he wrote great lyrics for wild honey and songs like "big sur", showing he could move on and develop as a songwriter. Then endless summer comes and he throws that out the window and turns himself along with the group into a self-parody recording/live act. I honestly think the BBs live act reached its peak in 1964 at TAMI show.

It was once told, many years ago, that Bruce Johnston was at one time a pretty good songwriter and gifted musician.  Today's generation knows him as the best audience conductor/cheerleader/microphone adjuster in the business, his past musical accomplishments a mere sidenote in history, almost lost to time.

Charles Manson actually wrote "Sumahama." The song dates back to the infamous late '68 Bellagio sessions and sat in the vault under lock and key until Bruce Johnston realized they needed one more song for L.A. (LIGHT ALBUM). Mike paid Charlie in prison cigarettes and meditation tapes for the rights. Charlie was pissed that his original lyrics in Japanese at the end, which contained secret coded messages to followers on how to start a race war between whites and Asians, were changed by the man who put his name to the final version.

Dennis Wilson faked his death and became a pastor of a church,,here's the link to prove it

Notice how the first line in the article is how he faces death everyday. see that proves it..

I thought this was a thread for myths...

Interestingly - and perchance significantly  - "Buddy Love" was the name Joe Thomas used to wrestle under. "Buddy Love - the women's pet, the men's regret".

 LOL

That is funny; of course I referred to Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor, but that was clear.

Not very far wrong, unfortunately.

This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-kAnNgqN9o) is that new sound Brian was looking for in the mid-60s.

My god. I'm watching this in its entirety for the first time...I kinda wished I hadn't. No wonder people don't take the Beach Boys seriously anymore Cry

These are funny. Nice topic! Smiley

I discovered that Brian Wilson spent 75-83 in a mental hospital. They found an over weight guy off the street to replace Brian on stage. His real name was Seymore Butts. He could play bass and keyboards and had a raspy voice. The band was surprised that he could actually write songs and was  the brains behind 15 Big Ones, Love You and the lost Adult Child album. Dennis and Carl really enjoyed working with Seymore and liked his interesting music. Mike and Al hated it and decided to not allow Seymore to be in charge any more. In late 1982, Seymore Butts died of a heart attack. What most people thought was Brian losing a lot of wait in short order in 1983 was actually the real Brian Wilson replacing Seymore. The Beach Boys thought that perhaps Eugene Landy could succeed with Brian like he did with Seymore Butts. The rest is history.

"Over the years, I've been accused of not supporting our new music from this era (67-73) and just wanting to play our hits. That's complete b.s......I was also, as the front man, the one promoting these songs onstage and have the scars to show for it."

Unknown to many, Brian Wilson's unhealthy attraction to a certain desert...

The Sahara... the Gobi... the Atacama... the Gibson ?  The Namib, perchance ? Do tell.

Seriously, I think I'm perfectly entitled to rip you a new one here for that. But I won't. This time...  Grin

Brian Wilson cracked up and lost his mind after his would-be masterpiece album, Their Satanic Majesties Regret, was rejected by the record label. He spent his last years in an alcohol, acid, and PCP-induced haze before drowning in George Thorogood's jacuzzi. Jacuzzi? JACUZZI?!

here's the things I can debunk from movies
- Brian did not have a beard in 1968 and was not as catatonic as portrayed
- Dennis was not the whiny b!tchy character as portrayed in "American Family"
- "Barbara Ann" was not recorded in 63 or 64 (in Summer Dreams)
- At the beginning of part two from "An American Family" they show the California Girls scene from 1968, not 1965
- Love to Say Dada does not contain the words "Geronimo Leaps"
- Mike was not a surf buddy of Dennis
