What the f*** did they do to this song? This song is the posterchild of bad indie music.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

As an unapologetic of Montreal fan, I can proudly say I have nothing against the version, either, though I don't much like the original or the cover. I just thought it was kind of cool to see it had been done.

Yeah, of Montreal is awesome even if I think this cover is a little too generic -- I'm surprised honestly, since Kevin Barnes is not someone who I'd normally say of their work that it's "generic"! I've not yet listened to their more synth-based stuff yet, however, I get the impression it's perhaps a little less wilfully strange than, say, The Gay Parade.

As for the cover itself, I think it's noteworthy that it isn't part of any particular release, but just something unceremoniously uploaded to youtube. In other words, Kevin was just recording something for fun.

As for "willfully strange," I will say that Kevin is Kevin. My observation of their music is that it hasn't changed much at all, other than who is playing and into what genre it's being shoehorned In other words, Kevin is always being willfully strange, for better or for worse. Or rather, that his approach to anything from Kinks or Zombies to Prince or Parliament, that it will always be KB filtered through that. So if you explore the "synth-based" period, you're just going to find KB. Which is good (say, to me) or bad (say, to...others).

I do wish more artists of that stature did that sort of thing, honestly. Even if I thought it was a bit underwhelming, I love that sort of off-the-cuff recording. More artists should have fun like that! I suppose that's true, yeah. "Our Riotous Defects" is a pretty funny song and although it doesn't sound like early of Montreal, it still seems obviously Kevin, haha. I saw them live last year at the Halifax Pop Explosion and they were great, even if I didn't know any of the songs they played since I had only listened up to Satanic Panic... by that point and they obviously played more recent (and then-new) stuff.

I actually thought it was quite good. I like the very subtle "psychadelic" sound of the vocals. Great video, too. Thanks for posting it Luther.  Smiley I decided to check out their YouTube channel, and Spiteful Intervention is one of the most interesting songs I've heard in a year or two.  Grin
