Can't help but notice some huge similarities between the BBs "Cool Cool Water/California Suite" and this 80's Fleetwood Mac b-side.

I know Lindsey Buckingham was a huge fan, but this is pretty cool (pun intended).

You know this is a cover of a famous song by the Sons Of The Pioneers, right?

Speaking of which, has the influence ever been discussed by Brian or Van Dyke or any of them? Every kid Brian's age grew up with the cowboy movies and shows on television, Roy Rogers and the like, and the original Sons Of The Pioneers were part of that whole scene. This song and the group was pretty well known up into the 60's, for sure!

The interesting Brian-Van Dyke-Smile connection is the album Marty Robbins did of cowboy songs, featuring El Paso (which some say was an influence on the Heroes And Villains lyric content and structure), and his cover of Cool Water, following the original Sons' harmonies pretty close.

I'm just wondering (or can't remember) if either the Marty Robbins' album or the original from the Sons Of The Pioneers was ever name-checked relating to Smile.

Sonically, it's hard to deny the similarities between parts of Brian's CCW and the original Cool Water (or Cool Clear Water, whatever the case), it's a matter of which version he might have taken a cue from.

As far as I know, there hasn't been an explicit namecheck, but the influence on not just Cool Cool Water but things like the cowboy theme (or whatever it is called) from the Smile version of Heroes And Villains is plain to hear.
Speaking of LB, he recorded several tracks in this Western-inspired feel in this era. Some can be heard on his Law And Order album, especially his delightful version of Satisfied Mind.

The opening of Cabinessence has that cowboy clipclop thing going like in the old cowboy songs.  Might be fun to listen for more western influences on SMILE.  I seem to recall a thread comparing some of this music to Aaron Copeland.

Yeah, the Home On The Range segment of Cabinessence is a perfect example as well.

These are all good points. I wonder how much Brian was inspired by the Sons of Pioneers original then...hmmm.
