The MC of some of our fondest memories and dreams left us Friday. He was 73. Thank you Jimmy, very much. Till next week...

Here's Jimmy's obit from the LA Times. I get the feeling a movie is gonna be pitched sometime. Heck of a story. I did not know that we have Chuck Barris of Gong Show/"Palisades Park" fame to thank for Shindig getting on the air.

Another good one gone. Wish I could have pinned him down on Pandora's box dates....
As to the video, the vocals seem live; is the backing pre-recorded or live?

It's a shame they left the old vocal on PLMW - we could have had another brief Brian live gem!

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Truly...when I heard he was gone I just grabbed the first clip I spotted but should have gone with this. If I ever do anything to merit going to heaven I just hope Jimmy is at the gates to greet me - wearing that jacket of course.
(The one I put up does have Long Tall Texan though. My cousin Ralph turned 62 a few days ago. He has been a fan ever since he heard Surfin' Safari in Ohio when he was 11. As soon as Concert came out, his fave BBs song became Long Tall Texan. This has never changed. When I told him about hearing TWGMTR last year, he asked, "is there anything like Long Tall Texan on it?" I told him I wasn't sure. Still need to think it over.)

I love the pacing and the format of Shindig was brilliant. He was a really great emcee and you could feel his love of music.

Whenever I hear or read a reference to Shindig or Jimmy O'Neill, I always immediately think about that scene in The Kids Are Alright where he introduces The Who doing I Can't Explain. It was that very clip that made me realise how awesome Keith Moon was as a drummer.

The clip is pretty interesting. Moon gets by far the most footage, medium shots of him in action, and the closeups are almost all of the Ox and Roger. There's no closeup of Pete for quite a while - I get the feeling in the control booth they were thinking, "Is America ready for that nose?"

Not to take away from the subject of this topic, but that clip was awesome!
I couldn't help but to keep singling out Dennis as the biggest highlight of that footage. It was like he OWNED the spotlight.
I sometimes forget how much of a huge force he was as a drummer.

That clip is truly Exhibit A for showcasing both Dennis's drumming skills and his ability to handle a crowd from the drumstool. Also, Carl's intro to Johnny B. Goode is beautifully done - prime rockin' Carl.
It's interesting that a week or so before Carl's guitar teacher John Maus had played Chuck Berry on the show too - "Promised Land," in his capacity as one-half of the Walker Brothers, still over a month from moving to London and eventual superstardom.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdANAdaxT8A
shows that appearance (which is minus third Walker Gary Leeds). They look - and sound - quite, quite different from the Walkers that conquered the UK and Europe the next year.
