The harmonies remind me of The Grateful Dead.

Never thought about it before, but now that you mention it- YES. America was obviously hugely influenced by the Beach Boys as so many groups have been. I'm sure the Boys would have been quite at home singing much of America's catalog. Ventura Highway is one of my all-time faves.

But America's "Sister Golden Hair" reminds me of George Harrison.

I wouldn't be surprised if Brian enjoyed their George Martin production as well.

And that song was played by the Boys when Gerry Beckley substituted for Mike in 1990: http://members.tripod.com/~fun_fun_fun/5-90.html

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.- Lester Bangs on The Beach Boys PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LISTTo sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.- Jack Rieley

You all realize that Festus was a well known singing cowboy before Gunsmoke and actually the original performer of the song Horse With No Name written by Tom Mix when he was lost in the desert, became delirious, and forgot the name of his horse?

If I was dying in the middle of the desert forgetting the name of my horse would be the least of my worries.

It was written about his experience after the fact; "I've been....." rather than "I am in the desert on a horse with no name...."
