Famous Memphis musician BB Cunningham Jr (of "Let it all hang out"-fame, bass player for Jerry Lee Lewis and brother of Box Tops' bassist Bill) was shot in Memphis yesterday.

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

RIP -- for his "Let it Out" (AKA "Let it All Hang Out") by the Hombres alone I consider him a genius!  Sad story though -- working as a security guard.  Guess Jerry Lee didn't pay so well....

That song "Let It All Hang Out" that the late BB Cunningham co-wrote is one of my all time favorites. Two years after it was a hit in the States, Jonathan King of "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" fame recorded it for the UK market. His version is sung in so mannered a fashion as to make Tiny Tim sound like Howlin' Wolf.

Speaking of King - something I came across on Spotify the other day was his 1967 album "Or Then Again," which includes "It's Good News Week," which he wrote and produced for Hedgehoppers Anonymous - that record was a major UK hit and made top 40 in the US, I think. The version on the album has completely different lyrics from the earlier record, and one line in it (following references to Davy Jones, Elvis, and Lennon) is "I don't believe that Brian Wilson's gone away."  Wonder if John Cale heard that before writing "Mr. Wilson" which has a similar line.
