Man Bill and Sue is one of the best on the new album
I can see how the calypso stuff is a major turn-off though

Micha, what was the reason they played it ? Did they say anything about the concerts, etc. ?

No, it's a music-only program. They usually have great stuff there. More playlists here:

This particular show is rebroadcast once more at 20:00 here:

Maybe the DJ admires the production? It does have a pretty cool Spector vibe in the chorus.

I have no idea. But today they had a nice version of God Only Knows on, by a guy called Geoff Gascoyne. Very pretty, strings-only backing, very faithful to the original version.
This is also the only show I know that ever featured Dennis Wilson and Brian Wilson solo tracks. NDR Nightlounge is the name.

I first heard that tune on Vin Scelsa's Idiots Delight, he had pretty high praise for it and for the Beach Boys. He actually played the song and then read out the lyrics to the chorus and played it again.

Depends on your opinion. I enjoy Beaches In Mind, although I agree those aren't the best lyrics either. But not nearly as bad as TPLOBAS (cringes)!

I don't mind the songg too much (just a bit) but it's definitely the worst recording on the album imo. Sounds like a rehearsal. Nothing grooves.

Beaches In Mind is definitely a song that would improve drastically if there was some kind of arrangement on the verses.
The refrain is pretty catchy, but the verses don't rock. Or don't groove, as you word it.
TPLOBAS, however, can't be saved by reaaranging or new lyrics. You'd have to change the lyrics and the melody, but then it would be a different song altogether.

Every time I hear "The Private Life Of Bill And Sue", I picture people from Jersey Shore. I can't help it and it totally ruins the listening experience because I hate those people. I just... I can't do it ;(
I still like it more than "Beaches In Mind", though. That one takes the whole "Old guys out on the town at night in expensive restaurants wearing expensive shirts and expensive sunglasses indoors at night and playing guitar while laughing and flirting with the waitress but I love my wife and drinking in moderation" thing to extremes that I just can't really stomach most of the time.

I read the lyrics again now and I just can't find any of those "Old guys out on the town at night in expensive restaurants wearing expensive shirts and expensive sunglasses indoors at night and playing guitar while laughing and flirting with the waitress but I love my wife and drinking in moderation" in them. To me the lyrics are just about doing something again that you used to like but haven't done for quite some time (in this case surfing). My main concern about "Beaches In Mind" is still the lack of arrangement in the verses.
Hey, they didn't do a song about surfing the internet yet!

Maybe "Beaches in mind" was just a throaway that Brian gave Mike so he would have some surf material on the album....
There is one certain very interesting sound on that recording though. I'm not at home right now so I can't exactly tell you where it is but I think it's after the first chorus. What's that? A harmonica and what else ? Some fuzz tone ? I don't know. One of my favorite moments on the album

"Beaches in Mind" is the only song on TWGMTR I can't seem to get into. It's so incredibly lame, even by "Mike Love goes retro" standards. "Bill and Sue", on the other hand, has been a favorite right from the start. Like I said before, I think it's sort of similar to songs like "Busy Doin' Nothin'" or "Games Two Can Play" (although with quite a bit of Jimmy Buffett thrown in, I'll admit that).

I like Life of Bill & Sue, as well as Beaches in Mind. Esp. the latter, there's something about melody & Mike's vocals that I can't call it the weakest track of the album. As for the subject, it's unusual to hear this song, of all other in BBs catalog, on radio show. Because I suspect that it's not the most popular TWGMTR song & it hadn't got much airplay since album's release. So you can be glad that at least you caught this rare BBs case. And where? On your favorite radio show!
[/quote]
As I can't stand TPLOBAS I skipped the whole show when I found it on the tracklist.
The show actually
airs
in the night (2 to 6 AM) but repeats as a stream 3 times during the day. It introduced me to amazing music I would never heard if it wasn't for this show.

I hope this fits in here, but once again a radio station in Germany played a song from a new album. Only that it's NNP this time...
Just heard Saturday Night as I turned on the radio. Not only that, the presenter even talked about NNP and played a excerpt from an interview with She & Him followed by On The Island. To top it all off they played Sail Away, too. I'm still gobsmacked. These songs really sound great on radio.
I really hope that they will add some of these songs to their general playlist...

I'd be thrilled to hear anything from NPP on the radio! My local radio stations will play new Tom Petty, new Pink Floyd, new AC/DC, but no new Brian Wilson! It's a cryin' shame... understandable, I guess, as Brian isn't as big of a name as the aforementioned 3, but nonetheless unfortunate!
I did hear "That's Why God Made The Radio" (the song, not the whole album) once on the #1 local classic rock station here back in 2012, so not all hope for humanity is lost.

Bill And Sue is one of the songs when you start wondering if there was something more worth listening to in the bag of songwriting since the 90īs....apparently not
Bill And Sue isnīt SIP bad, but thatīs probably because it lacks the creep lyrics and the arrangements which makes SIP so easy to hate.
The again it isnīt quite as bad as the worst cuts from MIU and KTSA, at least they had Carl on vocs and the quirks were so laughable in their own unintentional existence that they could pass as at least as pleasant tunes. There is little doubt that Bill And Sue must be one of the least succesful BW attempts at music making!

Brian's not "macho" enough for the RAWK!!! stations. C'mon now, they've got the same 3 Zeppelin, Stones, Aerosmith, Skynyrd, Sabbath, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, and Motley Crue songs to loop again and again and again! And don't forget those misogynistic shock jocks who are sworn to uphold their duty to provide idiotic "comedy" between those same 25 songs that play over again and again and again.
