Not trying to bring you down, just remembering a friend..

It was 2 years ago this month that I lost one of my best friends in the world, Rev. Bob Hanes. From 1992 until 2012, we were on the phone to each other at least 4 times a week, sometimes daily. He introduced me to so many people, took the time to listen to me discuss our mutal loves, and in later years, called me for info as he told me "you are the walking dictionary of Beach Boys info" (ie: Hey, when was Runaway recorded? June 11, 1982 at the Blossom Music Center Cleveland).
I miss Bob everyday and would SO like to hear his opinons on the SMiLE release and the current reunion. They would be passionate, insightful, and probably non-printable. He call me at the end of June to play the demo of California Feelin....still ever the fan sharing.

I am eternally grateful to both Bobs - the Reverend, and you, Mr. Petsite - for stoking the fire of my nascent fanhood back in 1995, with conversations and generosity. THANK YOU.
I miss those posts emanating from the Church of the Harmonic Overdub. Bob Hanes was such a natural guy. Direct, funny, honest, passionate, compassionate, and way too liberal with commas.

You are most welcome. Hey, all you have to do is play the music. The rest takes care of itself.

Bob was an amazing guy, sorely missed by all who knew him. The memoriam in the
Smile Sessions
booklet was a lovely touch, and richly deserved (and he'd have been so embarrassed had be been around to see it).

I remember about twelve years ago Bob and I had gotten into some kind of e-mail conversation that ended up with me giving him my work number. The next morning I had to go to the Javits Center for a trade show *yawn*, and when I got back to the office that afternoon there was a message in my voice mail that consisted of just "Add Some Music" with the alternate lyrics...
Over the years he did share a lot of eye-opening dirt with me...well, not all "dirt" -- some was actually pleasantly surprising...
And he went to the grave seemingly without telling anybody how he happened to be connected to Brian & company...

Some of us knew. It starts by being OLD.....and you go from there. Peter Reum is also another person that has been so forthcoming since the early 1980s with me. It's sad that our friends are going. PETER-you better plan on staying! Andrew Doe as well!

I'm a long time lurker on the board and finally have something to add that I believe is of value....
I was lucky enough to have Bob Hanes take me under his wing (as he did for so many others) when I was a teenaged customer in his downtown Portland, Oregon record store in the early 1980's. All of us here who were touched by this generous man will remember him in our own ways and I want to make sure the people on this board know of another way to keep his memory alive.
Bob is obviously cherished by those of us who are fascinated by the Beach Boys music, history, etc. but he is equally cherished by an entirely different group of people--the students (especially the track and field athletes), parents, administrators, etc. of his alma mater, South Eugene High School in Eugene, Oregon. When we lost Bob two years ago, a scholarship for college-bound South Eugene students was established in his name at the school.
Knowing that students are only in high school for four years, you can quickly do the math and realize that in the very near future, no student on that campus will have actually personally known our friend/mentor Bob. If anyone feels so moved, we can keep his memory alive and his story told at awards assemblies by continuing to keep his memorial scholarship funded. If you so desire, contributions can be mailed to:
Mr. Dave Hancock, Athletic Director
South Eugene High School
Bob Hanes Memorial Scholarship Fund
400 East 19th Avenue
Eugene, Oregon 97401
Thanks for reading,
Mark (in Phoenix)

My mom knew Bob when she worked at the St. Vincent De Paul here in Eugene, Oregon. He would always come and raid the record shelves. I was never able to meet him, but I'm sure he was a very nice man.

No kidding...I must have 6 copies of Leaf's book. Bought new and then on cut-out shelves. I have 4-5 of Byron's, 2 or 3 of Brad's. And the list goes on....and on...and on....
When I was talking about LA (Light Album) earlier, I went and looked. I have like 12 copies of the LP. Most are promo copies unplayed. Pays to be an intern at a rock station in 1979.

Rev. Bob was one of my best friends as well. Like Bob F. I probably spoke to him 2-3 times a week, up until the time he got sick and withdrew from the Beach Boys scene, and focused on spending time with his family. I don't think more than a couple of days goes by without me still thinking of Bob. In fact, when I saw the thread about the "Preiss Tape," Bob immediately came to mind, as he was the one who gave me my copy.
I miss him.

Truthfully, I am two cells phones away from when Bob passed...and I still have his number copied over to every new one I get.
Funny story with Bob. Back in 2005, we were talking about Mike Love lyrics. After going back and forth, Bob said to me "Well you may like his lyrics on some things, BUT, lets look at Fun Fun Fun. He kept using NOW at the end of every line. You would NEVER find Brian doing that!!"
"Oh yeah? Time for supper NOW days been hard and I am so tired feel like eating NOW. Smell the kitchen NOW......Bob...Bob......did you just hang up on me!?!?!?"
He called me back about 3 mins later and said "WHY DO U HAVE TO REMEMBER EVERY F***ING THING!!!" and we both laughed for a good couple of minutes.

I only knew Bob by a short, but intensive exchange of e-mails just prior to the SMiLE premiere in 2004, but it was enough to judge his character as extremely warm-hearted (I hope this means the same in English as in German) and helpful. So sad when he died before the TSS release. Oh, and of course I wish he would still be with us for a long time
after
that, too!

I've told my story on other threads about how I got hooked up with Bob. In short, around ten years ago my then-wife was shopping for BBs 45s to fill in some gaps in my collection at a local shop called "House of Records" when the folks there referred her to Bob Hanes. And the rest is an all too short but wonderful chapter in my life. Bob invited me into his home as if I were an old long time friend. He had a LOT of really cool stuff around the house that he was very proud to show off and talk about. His favorite thing seemed to be when I would come over (by invite, of course; I knew he was a very busy guy), he would have some new acquisition, a tape or cd, or a video that he would play for me without saying anything and I'd have to guess what it was, or when it was from. I was almost always way off, which I think he found very amusing! I learned so much from him!
He also listened to (or put up with, however you look at it!) some pretty crude demos that I had recorded in a studio by a band that I was writing music for and playing bass with at the time. His critique was very valuable to me and encouraging, and I appreciate that he took the time. That's the kind of person he was. He had a huge love for music and the whole vibe surrounding it.

This is a pic of (from left to right) UNKNOWN (sorry, bad with names), Steven Dunn, Lee Dempsey, Bob Hanes and David Leaf. They were together for the ROXY concert that produced the live CD in 2000.

I don't think anyone who knew Bob will have been brought down by this. I never got to meet him in person, but knew him via email for a dozen years or so and counted him as a friend, and still miss him. He was one of the good guys.

Hey Bob -- I believe the guy front left is Rich Sloan, Brian's childhood friend. Bob Hanes brought him down for a "reunion" with Brian.
