Y'know, the new Japanese Stereo Smiley is so good that this afternoon I caught myself humming the stereo version of IJWMFTT instead of the mono, for the first time.

Hmmm... yes John but were you being Autotuned???

I absolutely refute any such suggestion. The fact that my lead hum was double tracked will be explained by my learned friend.

Apologies btw as that post went in the wrong thread. What can I say... It was late...

How the f*** do fold-downs make it to onto discs advertised as mono so often? Is it some asshole engineer saying "lol i'll just fold this down if they want mono" and no one in the band, the record company, or involved with the original creation of the album not bothering to listen to the results before this sh*t is all pressed up and ready to be shipped?
Well, technically it is mono. Nothing on the old LPs ever said "Dedicated Mono Mix". It is the lazy way out, for sure.

I mean more recently, though. I think it was Pink Floyd's first album a few years back, they were releasing an expanded edition that was said to contain both the original stereo and mono mixes, but it was found out that the mono mix wasn't the original mono mix and was just a fold-down of the stereo mix that someone who was entrusted to master the set (and do a good job, obviously) did just a few years ago when assembling the set. It was later corrected, but how in the hell does this even happen?

So often anymore, it's like the folks involved are asleep at the wheel when it comes to making sure the final product is correct. An album by a band I like released an album with not one, but two incorrect mixes (one including entirely different lyrics for one section) in 2005 and initially streamed the first single from it with a very, very rough mix by accident. Lyric sheets anymore have tons and tons of spelling and grammar errors, and even sometimes straight-up typing errors such as "anoyher" instead of "another" in one album insert I saw. It wasn't just some word in the middle of the lyric sheet (although there were errors there, too), either, it was the second word sang on the album.

Anywayz. Not to get Cohenesque on you, here, just sayin' it's odd how often things are released anymore with huge errors. I sincerely hope we don't get these discs in September only to find out that one of the albums has a fold-down or something instead of Brian's original mono mixes or something. Loud mastering to the point of distortion and clipping is no mistake, sadly.

Actually, the Pink Floyd "Piper At The Gates of Dawn" mono mix released as a mono-only CD WAS the correct mono mix, but due to an error by a mastering engineer, one measure(four beats) of music towards the end of the song "Flaming" were accidentally edited out. The same mono mix(but without that defect) was later offered as part of 2-CD & 3-CD editions of the album.

My bad. Like I said, I thought it was Piper, but I wasn't sure. It wasn't the 2CD/3CD set. Whatever album or band, I know it was one of several instances of a fold-down being released instead of a legit mono mix.

Is this the first time Party! has had a stereo release? Saw a Japanese vinyl the other day issued for an EMI anniversary which according to the OBI strip was in stereo. Didn't buy as I suspected Duophonic but wondered if anyone knew more?

The Beatles Capitol albums?

If you look a few pages back, I explain the problem with the first production run of "The Beatles-The Capitol Albums Vol.2", specifically the discs of "Beatles VI" & "Rubber Soul". Capitol replaced the bad discs for consumers. Here's a way to tell if you got the bad discs. In the bad disc of "Rubber Soul"(with the folded down mono), both the stereo & mono versions of "I'm Looking Through You" have the false start. In the corrected disc, only the stereo version of "I'm Looking Through You" has the false start. That is the way it should be.

Also got my order from CDBANQ today...."Today" and "Summer Nights"....popped in "Today"....overall pretty pleased although "Do You Wanna Dance" sounds a little weird in stereo.  Something about the quality on that one that sounds off.

I don't think any UK/EU domestic release has been hinted at yet - the discs shown at Amazon UK look to be US imports (most are labelled "Import" and all share ASIN numbers). Same with the DVD/Blu-ray release and the two GHits packages.

Anyone one know more?

via Brian Wilson's FB:

"The 'Boys hit Tokyo, Japan Thursday night - who's going? Here's a photo from a Japanese press conference."

Of course Summer In Paradise is missin' on the promo picture, but all the rest of the albums seems to be on it.. (i believe Love You i hidden behind Brian Wilson -haha- and Friends right behind Al Jardine) so, does this means anything? any more info on this press conference?

I don't think it is, but then yeah - I can't tell what's behind Mike's back. Really hope it's up there. I can not listen to the damn thing sans a song or two (and even then), but you can't change history and attempting to rewrite the facts is silly.

Or it's possible that SMiLE might be up there. At least in the zinepak and in the tour program it was pictured after Still Cruisin'.

And apparently Stars & Stripes has been wiped from their history, although it's always been a bit confusing whether it was a various artists tribute album or a "Beach Boys" album.

And now I look, both import and domestic versions are starting to appear on Amazon UK.

The two GHits sets - UK editions - are also now available for pre-order.

Normally when you type "Beach Boys" into Amazon's search engine, narrow the search Dow to "music" then further refine to list by "release date", it give a listing that includes acts it assumes might also be in the frame for your cash such as CSNY, Roxy Music, Joe Walsh, the Who etc.

It blows my brain to see that under the "forthcoming" listing are 18 titles and every single one of them is attributed to "the Beach Boys".

And the big box is yet to be announced.
