I just got my Pet Sounds UK mono vinyl LP 1st pressing from 1966 in VG+ condition.  I must say it sounds really weird, in a bad way.  Does anyone have this version?  I'm really suprised how odd it sounds (phasey, almost like a tape dub).  I'm especially surprised since England was where it was hailed as the masterpiece it is.

On the very inner vinyl after the last track is etched T1 2458 - 1 (side one)  and T2 2458 - 2
(side two)
There is also a G, does this help to determine which pressing it was?

I've done a little research and found a discussion:

"the 1st UK Mono pressing (T2458 with -1 -1 matrices) is a fold-down from the fake stereo.

I have a copy. It sounds nothing like the US Capitol mono, Carl and the Passions or the DCC. The UK Mono Pet Sounds is one of the most bizarre sounding (from an audio standpoint) records I've ever heard. It's all phasey, with pitch warbling up and down, like there were some speed issues in the playback somewhere along the way before the record was cut.

The process to create it could have been something like this:

Multi-track masters > mono mix > duophonic processing mix > tape copy of duophonic mix sent to England > fold-down of duophonic mix > LP lacquer"

Is this correct?

Oh well, I am a collector and glad to have the copy even if it doesn't sound great.

Does anyone know how the original US mono pressing sounds?

The 1966 Capitol press sounds meh. My copy sounds pretty muddy and dull. I mean, it's ok, but compared to the 'Carl and The Passions' vinyl it's not in the same league.
I can imagine the UK press sounds horrid - folding down duophonic doesn't magically take away the damage that's been done....
Capitol presses during this era were spotty (for instance, a mono US Capitol Sgt Pepper sounds lifeless, but a mono Magical Mystery Tour sounds great).

Yeah, it's the version that got me hooked, and to be honest, i kind of like it, bar any obvious percussive sounds (Intro to Waiting For The Day) - they always sound horrible!

I made a quick replica of this for wouldn't it be nice, but it's blocked in the US (bizarrely). Still works in alot of otehr places though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDW67To9iv0
