Hmm...well, I'm pretty sure it's not a cover of The Spencer Davis Group song despite what some would think, per AGD if I remember correctly. Apparently written by Brian. That's all I knowl.

I kinda wish it was. Brian had the voice for it at that time and I love the Spencer Davis Group/Chicago song.

Spencer Davis Group? The only "I'm a Man" I've heard is the Bo Diddley song, which cooks. Is this a cover of that?

I'm A Man was recorded by Brian at Mike's home studio July 1980, at the same sessions that yielded Be My Baby, River Deep, and Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love. Stevie was not recorded until January 1981. I don't think that Brian even wrote it until Fall of 1980. Isn't it weird how gruff Brian sounds on all the 79-80 tracks, but he doesn't sound that way on Stevie. Just sayin'.....

Thanks for the info. Didn't know about the other I'm A Man songs. Did Brian write and record much during 1980 - 1981 ?

Yeah, he did. Instead of pulling a brain muscle, let me quote Mr. Doe's wonderful board:

July 1980 - Mike Love's house: Be My Baby/River Deep Mountain High/Greenback Dollar/ Why Don't They Let Us Fall In Love ?/Bucks/Children Of The Night/I'm A Man

November 18,1980 - Brian Wilson session: Candlesticks/Boys & Girls/Up Again [Western]

January 14, 1981 - session: Stevie [Sounds Good]

Spring 1981 -  Brian Wilson demo sessions: Rings/Walking On Water/Sweetie

May 19, 1982 - Brian Wilson session: (title unknown) [Western]

May 27, 1982 - Brian Wilson session: Why Don't You Tell Me Why [Western]

June 2, 1982 - Brian Wilson session: Cry Like A Baby/(untitled) [Western]

November 1982 - Brian Wilson/Dennis Wilson sessions: Oh Lord/City Blues/Heroes & Villans [Garby Leon's home studio] [16]

I wonder if "Why Don't You Tell Me Why" was the same song from the sessions with Dennis? It seems like it would be, going by the lyrics.
