OK... does anyone know why they used real Beach Boys songs and vocal snippets for the rest of the movie, but made up a fake song for no discernible reason when it came time to cover Smile (about a minute after "Geronimo" stops playing, we hear a real take of "Let the Wind Blow")? Why couldn't they use "Cabinessence"? What were they afraid of?

As I recall, VDP wouldn't allow any of his Smile lyrics to be used.

The backstory of the genesis of "Geronimo" is quite a hoot.

Please don't tell us the story.

It's funny, by VDP refusing to allow his lyrics to be used, he gave up his only defense against the smear tactics in the film. If "Cabinessence" was playing in the background of that scene, if would put Mike's complaints in the proper perspective. Instead he's slamming what amounts to a noticeably worse version of "I Love to Say Dada" with lyrics that truly are pointless.

I love that Let The Wind  Blow harmony with all the echo, would be great with such a version. The WH version never really did it for me.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

As I recall, and it was over a decade ago, Gary Griffin had written a cod-Smile piece of music for the scene in question to fill the void caused by VDP's embargo, but couldn't come up with a suitably Parksian title, and at lunch on set one day, he mentioned this to a friend, who entirely off the cuff came up with "Geronimo leaps..." and thought no more of it... until he was at the shooting of the "GL" scene and heard the phrase over the playback. And was decidedly unamused.

I'm most reliably informed that a complete version, with full lyrics, exists.
