Yeah, that was a ridiculous reason for closing the topic. When there's no information about the boxset anyhow, there's no harm in go a little off the topic.

I suppose if it was a bunch of posts of AGD taking shots at Phil Cohen, the thread would still be alive.

Actually, I was correcting his entirely inaccurate claims and deploring his unwaveringly depressing outlook. But yeah, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. With a bazooka.

No harm in calling posters homophobic either, huh ?

Can't say I disagree with your method, nor can I say that I don't enjoy your reactions to his posts. But on-topic they typically are not especially when the majority of the board clued into Phil Cohen a year ago and knows implictly not to take his claims and outlook seriously.

Well, it's hard to say for sure because they broke up but their last album went to #1, was the second fastest selling album of 2008 in the UK, and featured two singles to enter the top 10, including The Shock of the Lighting which was the highest charting single in the US in 10 years. To call them a "long gone fad" is entirely false. Of course, they don't have the same pervasive success they had in 1995/1996 but neither do The Simpsons.

The last 8 pages of a 53 page Beach Boys boxset thread were devoted to Oasis. I'm glad the thread was closed.

Not really. I don't know anybody who took those charges seriously. If that's Aegir's idea of a compelling argument, your reputation for tolerance will be safe for all of history.

Again, though, same thing happened on the Smile boxset thread. I'm glad that thread remained open. It was a great thread.

Indeed it was....but at least the Phil Cohen drama had something remotely to do with the thread topic.

I was hoping against hope this thread would be about the group with Peter Skellern and Mary Hopkin.  Wink  Grin

Well, it wasn't just Phil Cohen. Remember there was even a poll attached to that thread regarding how off-topic the discussion was and whether it should have been shut down. One option on the poll was: "I don't like drugs and I don't like SMiLE, we might as well delete this discussion." But of course the discussion moved on from the discussion of drugs eventually. But you still had posters 40 pages in: "Out of the 1000 posts, how many actually contributed anything?" Nevertheless, if that thread wasn't ultimate the place to get information about the Smile Sessions then I don't know what was.

Interesting to look back at how clean (and full-on bratty) Liam's vocals sounded on Definitely Maybe, compared to the gruff raspy sandpaper delivery that soon followed.

Come on, Andrew. I defended you. But you should have ignored it because Aegir's statement was just so ridiculous that it couldn't have been serious.
Anyways, I just think it's not that bad talking a bit about Oasis while waiting for more news.

The first Oasis album early singles are great. Second album less great, but still good. She's Electric might be their best song, even though the crass Beatles ending and subtle You Make Loving Fun steal in the chorus (listen to the backing vocals on the choruses of both) bother me. Be Here Now was one of the biggest disappointments and wastes of money I have ever experienced. Haven't paid too much attention after that. I did see them at Coachella around 2002 and they were good, tho they just sounded like Slade with drum loops. A shame Andy Bell, a part of the infinitely superior Ride, submerged his talent as a sideman in Oasis.
To me, Oasis have always sounded a thousand times more similar to Cheap Trick than The Beatles. And oh yeah, listen to the chord progression of Dramarama's What Are We Gonna Do, then Champagne Supernova.

Disagree to death about Be Here Now, but that's OK. :D

Talking about 'She's Electric' (which I agree, is probably one of their best songs), I made this a few years ago: http://db.tt/CVFADN9x
(Oasis -> Beulah -> Kinks) - fun eh? Razz

Quite liked stuff off the first album - Supersonic, Slide Away, Live Forever, Columbia and a few from WTSMG but after that it all went to sh*t for me, Be Here Now was as uninspired an album as I have ever heard. Noel and Liam continually proclaiming themselves the best band in the world didn't help matters either, that sort of staggering arrogance did not endear them to me at all.
