I've never seen this before. the audio is really bad but it's a minute or so of Brian and Carl on their tourbus or something. it's really great footage.

It popped up in the YT thread or somewhere a few weeks ago. I like this kind of stuff. It shows the mutual love and deep respect they had for each other. Brian must really miss him. Him and Dennis, of course.

It says 1994, but it's not filmed in 1994 is it?

Considering BW looked like this in 1995:

I'd guess mid 80s. 1984?

The video tape itself is mis-labeled, but the YouTube heading clearly says "1984".  Wink

I believe that's Jerry Schilling walking in behind Carl. I don't think he was around in the 90's.

It's from the 1984 Fourth of July show.  There was a lot of backstage filming at that event-for American Band Documentary and many news outlets. It was the first return to DC after the infamous Watt incident.  Carl didn't look like that in 1994-by the way.  His beard was mostly gray by then and he was heavier set.

I believe their hug is actually in the Malcolm Leo doc, iddn't it? Right at the end. And Brian didn't look like that in 1994, either. Super-thin and bearded was the first stage of the second Landy era. I think he shaved right around the time of Live Aid a year later.

You know you're a fan when you can date a rock star by beard era....

Ha! I didn't even see that! i toyed with 'early to mid 80s' and '1985' before typing '1984'.

In the mid-90s, I was in an Economics class and the guy sitting next to me, knowing i was a huge BB fan, asked something about whether any of them ever had beards... so, i spent the next few minutes constructing (surreptitiously) a facial hair timeline of the 6 main BBs from joining date to the present...

Brian's beard can be dated even more precisely. He appeared at two benefit shows in 1985 and both were videotaped.  In the March benefit show he has a beard, by the time of the May one it is gone.  Getcha Back video-he still has beard-hence filmed prior to May 1985.

yeah, I did think it was strange that Brian had a beard in 1994.

My 1985 copy of the Leaf book is up in the attic, but I seem to remember a pic from newly shaved Brian at that one benefit in DL's "Coda" section. There's also a pic of him and Leaf where he's still bearded.

You know you're a real fan when you can date the beards by which books (or videos) you've seen the bearded pics in....!

Yep.  I remember seeing Brian (not in person) around May/June 85 sans beard and thinking "awesome" (I actually talked like that then, I was 16), he looks like Pet Sounds Brian again.  The beard-free event was the Malibu ER benefit, by the way.

The biggest surprise for me in this video is the non-presence of any Landy type people. And that was one wonderful hug!

I have a beard related question about Brian, so I guess this might be a good place for it. In the Heroes and Villains book, there is a picture of a bearded Brian with glasses on, and an unbuttoned shirt. The date given is 1981, but that's never seemed quite right to me for some reason. Does anybody remember the picture I'm talking about? Does anybody know exactly when it was taken?

Yep, recall that one well. The caption in my copy reads: "Brian at almost 300 pounds in the parking lot behind Brother Studios in Santa Monica." I reckon sometime in 1976.
