Fantasitic clip. Watching that and the 'Surfin USA' clip above it with Brian on bass smiling I have only one thing to say.

As a touring Beach Boy.....Brians Back!

also

Just noted this poster on the brit site. Fans of the old Male Ego Board will know the name. Good to know he is well!

Hey everyone. Long time.

Just wanted to say that I went to the second Beacon show last night and I couldn't be more pleased with every single thing that went down. Don't read up on the set lists (I did not), just GO. So well done on every level. This is truly a special tour.

A few non-spoilers... Bruce is a master. Al's voice was magnificent last night. The set list was fantastic. Brian had some terrific moments. Cowsill is really playing well. Really nice to see and hear Marks doing his thing. Mike is Mike - reliable and steadfast. The back-end boys were on it!

Talked to Darian, Probyn, Nelson, David and Bruce afterwards. These guys all seem really pumped up and really happy to be doing this.

Fun fact I learned last night talking to Darian... his first Beach Boys concert ever in life was the first show on this tour. Unreal!

I have a hard time believing this, since he has been a huge BBs fan since the 80s.  Huh

But to good to hear the backup guys are having a blast, too.  3D

Junkstar.  A couple people whined and pissed and moaned that he do something about Male Ego and he folded.  Too bad.  That was a good board.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Male Ego sure was a great board ( and hey even Bruce dropped by now and again ) but this board is equally great ( other than Cohen ) if not better

Nah. It's always connected to the BBs, and before they became a part of Brian's tour band themselves there was hardly any way to experience his music live if not by going to a BBs show. That's one (good) reason I'd take that quote with a grain of salt. Plus, I was always under the impression that Sahanaja (and his peers) were fans of (almost) the whole catalogue (not in the same direction as folks like Foskett, but not "only the artsy and quirky stuff"-purists, either). You got any evidence that Sahanaja considers himself a "huge Brian Wilson fan", and not a general BBs fan?

Actually he's been a huge Dennis Wilson fan too, showed up at the launch party for my book back in 2000 with total hardcore knowledge about Dennis...and he's a huge Dave and the Marksmen fan...Wondermints covered I Wanna Cry in the early days.

Given the state of the touring band between 1981 or so and about ten years ago, it wouldn't surprise me at all if someone like Darian would rather not have seen those songs performed live at all than see them done like that. Remember, one of the conditions he made on joining Brian's band is that they would play the arrangements like on the records.

If every couple of years you see the BBs on TV doing something hugely embarrassing (the infamous Washington concert, the 25th anniversary show, the appearances on Full House and Baywatch, and so on), and you know that the shows are full of cheesy keyboards, Adrian Baker's off-key falsetto, special guest appearances by John Stamos and so on, and that the setlist would include a load of covers of Jan & Dean and Ronnie And The Daytonas songs plus Problem Child and almost all the Still Cruisin' album, you might well not want to go and see that, thinking it would be too sad.

There are plenty of musicians whose work I love who I've never been to see live, either because when they've toured it's been an inconvenient time or because I've heard that they're not very good live any more and don't want to be disappointed. I don't see any reason why that couldn't be true of Darian.

BTW...I've seen Brian solo a dozen times, and I've seen Dave and Al's side projects...but this tour 2012 is the first time I've seen The Beach Boys without Dennis Wilson.

I didn't say it ain't true, I don't know if it is. I just find it hard to believe, even in the light of the state of the BBs at certain points of time, that a 'mega fanatic' like Sahanaja wouldn't once in over two decades visit a concert of his musical heroes. Even in view of what you said (and what is true) about the BBs in the 80s, he could've attended a concert in the early 80s (when the live BBs were still okay) or in the 90s.

I didn't want to start some discussion about Sahanaja's honesty or whatever - maybe it's the truth, maybe he joked around, maybe he's deceptively quoted. I just find it hard to wrap my head around the thought that somebody like him would "attend" his first BBs gig in 2012, is all.

I know that Darian has made it a rule to generally avoid the Brian "hits" tours (that's what Gary Griffin is there for), and has also shied away from the Papa Do Ron Ron / Jan and Dean backing band nexus that a lot of the backing guys have whirled through at one point or another. (Heck, even Probyn and Scott dipped their toes in that scene with "The OC Beach Band" http://www.bookmusiciansdirect.com/us/ocbeachband.) He takes the music and history very seriously.

And I said he was a BW fan because he covered a song from Sweet Insanity -- as a single! That's a pretty hardcore BW nut thing to do (Also Guess I'm Dumb, I believe). But it makes sense, as Jon said, that he would also be a Denny and Dave fan. They're both artistically pure. Just his general personality and attitude suggest that he's not the type of guy to really enjoy Mr. Love's traveling show, if that makes any sense.

All of that being said, I'm glad he loosened up a little bit and went along for the ride on this tour.

That's my general impression/knowledge of him as well.  Smiley Still, it's really an odd "fact" (or rather, occurence) that the first concert of his favourite recording artists he attends is a 50th anniversary gig at which he plays in the backing band. Oh well, maybe I'll have a chance to ask him myself in Berlin.^^

What really matters is that with Sahanaja a hardcore fan became a vital part of the (on-going) legacy of his favourite band*, and even helped to form said legacy (SMiLE and all). Good for the guy.  Smiley

It was so weird on Tuesday watching Darian looking at Stamos playing drums and time his keyboard hits to Stamos's drum hits. he seemed to be enjoying the novelty of it. never thought I would see Darian and John Stamos on the same stage, let alone locking into a groove together.

I really wish my show wasn't so early in the tour! I would kill to see Add Some Music and Hawaii live! Not to mention Brian becoming more comfortable, he seemed quite down at the Hollywood, FL show. Regardless, I'll never forget that night (especially after playing it back in my head about eight times a day).

Any videos around of Add Some Music or Hawaii?

As much as I love it, I think that dropping The Little Girl I Once Knew in favor of Marcella was a great move...it's much easier for people who are unfamiliar with Marcella to get into that than into TLGIOK.

Terrible move for my taste...

If you won't attend the Berlin show 3 months from now, please allow me to wish for Marcella being dropped for The Little Girl I Once Knew then. Smiley

Big no from my side ! Marcella has to be tehre !! I love TLGIOK, so it could be added. But never ever again take Marcella out of the setlist !!

If you look at his right hand though he's playing different strings and staying in time with the song. There's certainly a way to play all the root notes to Surfin' USA without ever having to move your hand.

Justin,

did you notice if this show was being filmed for future use in a dvd by chance?  Also, you're an LA guy, right?  You flew to NY just for this show?  You called that one right...

Yup went from LA...got back early this morning and I'm sick as a dog.  A monster of a flu that is kicking my ass.  So I dont know when I'm putting up my pics but maybe in the next day or so.  But I am currently uploading my video of "Add Some Music To Your Day" hopefully by the time I get out of bed in a few hours it'll be ready for posting.  When they were singing it I saw a whole bunch of people in the section behind me standing (like me) with their phones/cameras all pointing towards this wonderful spectacle.  They knew just how special it was.  Surprised no video has surfaced yet.  Maybe in a few days.  But mine will be up momentarily.

And nope, didn't notice one camera at all inside the room.  Definitely not being filmed that I can tell.  The only camera was outside the venue where they were grabbing people for mini interviews regading the BB.  But not one camera inside filming the show.  Shame because it was a rocking show.

My video of "Add Some Music To Your Day"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HSWj2DKtd4&feature=youtu.be

Note AL and Bruce sharing mics...funny.  I would've caught the whole thing but security was really tight about videos.  I was lucky to get this out as the second set started--they weren't standing at their posts yet.  Had they done this on the first Beacon show....I would've gotten a perfect show of the whole group since I was right in front of Brian's piano.

first time in 42 years, says Bruce.. . .

Now we are going beyond all dreams and expectations: the BB singing a cut from Sunflower, around the piano with Brian playing, ol' Al taking Carl's verse, elegant minimal accompaniment, Jeff being lovingly reverent and supportive (he has totally adjusted his Dodger stadium strategy).   This is not real. . ..

In other news, I see that Bruce offered some political analysis of the election. . .
Though a Republican, I prefer when my heroes stay out of politics, if only because I hope there is no backlash that hurts the BB and the sales. It's not "hip" among the young to be a Conservative (unless you're Johnny Ramone). I just hope it goes away.

Also, some thought my response o the Village Voice essay was harsh, but I want to do all I can to combat error and analysis that might dissuade any  listener from getting the album or listening to the single, etc.  Just trying to apply by craft to some BB defense.

I also agree the the performance of TWG is evolving toward clarity and precision.  I hope that who ever is producing the official DVD that we will be buying from PBS of from whomever soon is vigilant about going a good job; they ought to have recorded various shows and chosen the best performances instead of banking on one.

thanks and best wishes to all my co-celebrants of all these marvelous events
