To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

My understanding is most tracks recorded "live" at the BBC in the '60s were full studio productions. It wasn't like it was a band playing with just the usual set-up live in a studio. You can tell that the voices were overdubbed multiple times on that recording. Still, impressive and different, and I'm sure Brian didn't have a lot of time to work on it. Thanks for sharing.

Depended on the band - even The Beatles didn't overdub until some of their last BBC sessions. I can understand The Beach Boys, traveling from overseas and with perfectionist Brian....

I"ve got the Beatles live at the BBC album and it's great.... I also have Roy Orbison's, I believe it was recorded in the 80s though.

I think Orbison's
Live at the BBC
CD compiles recordings from various BBC appearances, not just stuff from the 80s.

I don't know. The voices sound definitely double tracked (at least). Jerry Lee Lewis did some sessions as well and those are certainly not worked on:

Many thanks for the heads-up to the heads-up! Gorgeous...
I wonder though how many tracks the BBs would have squeezed into their allocated time? Give the Beatles half an hour and you'd probably get ten songs; given that the BBs seem to have done vocal overdubs, I suspect half an hour per song might have been a tall order!

Okay, had a quick look at Badman.
Nov 5 lists a BBC TV live performance of I Get Around, When I Grow Up.
Nov 6 lists ARTV Ready Steady Go perf of I Get Around, When I Grow Up.
Also a Nov 6 Playhouse Theatre BBC Light Prog Top Gear "live" perf of:
I Get Around,
Hushabye
, Surfin' USA, Graduation Day, Wendy, Little Old Lady, When I Grow Up.
Badman's book is pretty detailed about this UK visit but can't find a ref as to his source for the info.
If this Hushabye perf is from the Nov 6 Playhouse sessions, then I'd LOVE to hear the rest.
Wonder why this has surfaced now? Has someone been investigating the BBC archives for a possible BBC Sessions release? Or maybe the purported boxset archivists have been trawling archives the world over for long-forgotten gems worthy of inclusion in the 50th anniversary release. Or maybe it's just a one-off, happenstance thing… Good tho', innit!

Our posts crossed… started mine before lunch, finished it later…
That's spot-on for the Badman tracklist, just a day out.

The Beeb must have a stack of stuff like this; I believe some has shown up in recent years, and there was a suggestion that a release of some kind might be considered.
See:

… which I found via this old thread:
