New Van Dyke Parks interview

Just posted on Facebook. Nothing new, but he really, humbly, delves into his musical life, and his past. It's a wonderful interview.

On SMiLE:
"That album took up eight months of my life. It's an amazing thing, in fact, because it's a very peculiar piece of Americana. It was truly the first interactive or bootlegged album. It became highly interactive, and also became the thesis of one novel. It was a joy, though, to be able to bring that piece of pop-art to the ear."
On Skrillex:
"Then, I YouTube'd him and found a video of him spilling beer on his laptop onstage in front of thousands of people and I thought, "What is going on?""

God must’ve smiled the day Brian Wilson was born!

Van Dyke watching dubstep concerts on youtube.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Right!?
I am DYING to see what he came up with. In that LA Times article from October (I think) VDPs said it was some of the best work he's ever done (speaking of the Skillex collaboration).

God, I love Van Dyke Parks. He is the best.
Also, I love how the interviewer calls him 'sir' during. I called him 'sir' when I met him briefly, I think he commands southern gentility? How does someone in the 21st century even do that?!

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

He was tersely tactful about the Beach Boys reunion. Does he really not have a television set? Hm.

I know a lot of people--well, several people--without televisions. World keeps turning.
Anyway, I'm excited to say that VDP is scheduled to play here in a little over a week. I'm thrilled. Anyone seen him in the past few weeks/months: is he absolutely solo, or are Clare and the Reasons serving as his backing band?

It's really just The Reasons - Claire came on for a couple of numbers when I saw him last year.
He also didn't wear shoes.

He said he's got a trio. So that'll be cool.

Did he wear denim overalls? He did when I saw him. I guess he goes for that bucolic sophisticate image.

Maybe the whole thing was an inside joke. "Keep your shoes on."
