It's interesting that Dave said Mike asked him to come back and play bass, and Dave declined. It seemed like it would have made more sense to have Dave come back on guitar and shift Al to bass. It would have been interesting to see how the Beach Boys story would have changed if Dave had come back in 1972.

It seems as though the idea was to have David Marks back in the band, as opposed to needing another guitarist, and then hunting Marks down. The description in David's book with Jon Stebbins seems to indicate that Mike wanted David in the band, and then they tried to find something for him to do in the band.

I was just re-reading parts of this great book, and it's interesting how David made a number of quick guest spots with the band over the years, in 1971 or so, and also with Mike's band in the early 80's, and then a few other times as well prior to coming back in 1997.

That story of him playing on "Sweet Insanity" is pretty entertaining! (That's what I was most recently re-reading!) Smiley

It really is strange how everyone assumed Carl would beat the cancer.

I remember about two or three months before he died a poster on the old Wheeler board posted that Carl wasn't doing too well, and that Audree was also near the end. Person got flamed by just about everyone on the board (including me).  I've often wondered who that person was.

Not 'everyone' - if you've ever experienced cancer at close quarters, you'll know that when someone's diagnosed with secondaries, that's pretty much it. When I was told of Carl's condition, I started readying an obituary.

Meant everyone on that board during that time, although considering how long ago that was, I may have forgotten the ones who did realize the severity. And yeah, during that time I was still a kid (19, but completely sheltered) and hadn't experienced any tragedy first hand. Boy, THAT would sure change over the next few years ;from 2000-2005 I lost my uncle who was like a second father to me (beat cancer but the chemo ruined his heart), both parents, a miscarriage, and then a stillbirth. -_-  These days I would've realized how bad off Carl was. In retrospect, he didn't look that well in the year before his diagnosis was announced.
