My impression of "Barnyard" was that it was a bit bland compared to Dennis' other material from that period. Knowing it was a DW/CW collaboration from '74 might have had my expectations too high, and I haven't heard it in a few years so maybe I'd have a different opinion now. But hearing it for the first time along with things like "Holy Man" and "C*cktails", it seemed to pale in comparison.
Compared to "Holy Man", most things seem pale.  Smiley Just to be 100% sure: Denny never actually recorded any vocals for "Holy Man", right? Taylor Hawkins did the vocals according Gregg Jakobson's memories of Dennis singing some of it?

Right-ish. There was a snippet of Carl humming the melody line on the session tape...nothing usable, but between that and Dennis' piano and synth lines i think the melody was inherent. Gregg isn't really a melody guy, so that was sorted without his help...he did write the new lyrics. BTW...thinking back to "Barnyard"...I was hoping for something like the other 1974/75 period DW/CW collaborations "River Song", "Rainbows"...and yes "Holy Man" (there are those of us who feel Carl had a hand in that one too). When I heard "Barnyard" it didn't seem to come close to the dynamic quality of the others...and unreleased seemed like a logical place for it to be. I'm sure others might feel differently as music is so dang subjective...right board?

I'm greedy  -  I have no opinion about what they should release, as long as they do release stuff.  I trust folk like Boyd to make the right choices on our behalf, as it were - they're astute fans, we share the same cravings.

I feel exactly the same way.  This material is "gold" and I'm glad to see that it's being treated as the musical treasure that it is.

What a terrific experience for Ponghit!  Outstanding!

It just has to be on one of those "commemorative releases" this year.... has to. I'll just go ahead and proclaim that by July/August each one of us has listened to it a few times.  Smiley

You say that, but then they chose to leave it off The Warmth Of The Sun didn't they! Why? Literally no-one can even begin to comprehend. The Beach Boys are a very exasperating group to be obsessed with - has there been another popular group in history who have so relentlessly kept such exceptional music hidden away from their fans in the vaults? It's madness! (After all, don't forget we've just had to wait 44 years for an (official) SMiLE release.

I'd love to hear a vocal only version of Time To Get Alone.

It's excellent, even among all the unreleased titles, this was a highlight for me — TTGA is one of my favorites — not just BB songs, but from anyone.

I completely feel the same way. One of my favorite songs period. I'd love to hear those backing vocals without music. Hopefully it will see release one day.

Totally random thing I just remembered: I was surprised that Alan didn't seem to know anything about the WALK HARD movie, and that Van Dyke had written a song for it, so I described the BW swipes in the flick, and the song, etc.

This thread embarrasssing. If I were the person being mentioned on a fanatic board, I would just invite the visitor to breakfast at Denny's on Sunsert and then get on with my day.

I would have taken him to Tommy's on Beverly/Rampart and asked for extra chili!

I really hope some of this stuff gets released before more fans literally die off. A good two-disc “Rarities” set would be a great start. I’m all for getting unreleased stuff any way we can, whether it’s scattered tracks on a new “boxed set”, or a nice rarities set, or bonus tracks on album reissues, or maybe even finally getting the “BB Central” potential downloads site up and running. I really hope we get a nice concentration on 70’s and 80’s (and even 90’s) stuff. There is just so much available, just in terms of what we know about. When you factor in potential stuff we don’t even know about, then the prospects are even more exciting.

If Alan Boyd is reading this by any chance, can you tell me anything more about the new footage of the 7/4/80 Washington DC show seen in the 50th Anniversary tour TV ads? That bit of “California Girls” is tantalizing. An uncut version of this show, or even any additional footage, is, as I mentioned in another thread, my weird idiosyncratic holy grail for BB unreleased material! I realize few other fans have this type of fervor for this particular show.

I was hoping we'd hear the origins of that film, namely why was it shot in the first place and what was it going to be used in or for?

Don't think Alan nor the others know the answer to that.

As part of an album, agreed about it being unreleased, at the time. But I think it's cool enough for an archival, 'oddities'-type collection. Maybe it's not as dynamic as some other things, but it sounded like there was a lot of work done on it — something 'solid' about it — not just a quick, rough demo/sketch of an idea.

First, thanks for your report !

Regarding "Barnyard", is that what is called "Barnyard blues" (iirc) in the article featured in "Back to the Beach" by Kingsley Abott ?

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

I can almost hear WIBNTLA in my head...at least the vocals, not the track...I can hear Denny singing it...is there any backing vocals to it? It'd be great if Blondie/Ricky were on it? The vocal I have in my head is much like his sensitive vocals in Be Still, A Time to Live in Dreams, and Cuddle Up.

Carl and Brian sing backgrounds. The lead vocal is the best one Dennis ever did IMO...including some soulful runs that will make you think its Carl for a second, but its Dennis.

Yep, there’s a brief discussion of it on another thread, I think the one about a TV commercial that is up on YouTube. It’s literally a few seconds of footage from 7/4/80. It’s synched up to the 60’s recording, but it’s definitely the band singing “California Girls.” I had asked, I believe, Alan Boyd probably a decade ago if the uncut footage of the show still existed in the BB vaults, but back then it apparently wasn’t there; they only had the 60-minute edit of the show. But they found something, and it’s in that TV commercial. It’s the same pro-shot angles as seen in the rest of the extant footage.

My weird BB footage holy grail is the whole show, but I know that even if they found some or all of the missing footage, I’ll likely never see it.
