I just stumbled upon this interesting recording. It is supposedly from a press conference in 1978. http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/media/s2568177.htm

Strange to hear Carl talk about how much better many bands he heard sounded live in comparison to the albums during a period where the BB shows were... well, good but not great.

I like Mike's comment about "You have to have a George Harrison who meditates and a George Harrison who doesn't." Pret-ty clever!

And Dennis just works the PR, works the legend so adeptly. He sounds good here (it probably wasn't Dennis at the end there, was it?)

I think it was Dennis at the end, he sounds similar to Carl though.

This was definitely BEFORE the 3/14 show where Carl was visibly and audibly out of it. Ironically, Dennis seemed the most sober of the Wilsons during that tour.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

First off let's debunk the "Le'id in Hawaii" boot myth that the GOK recording in was from the Sydney shows, it was not, I was at both Sydney Showground shows and Carl was fine. That recording is Perth.

Secondly that Triple Jay recording is interesting because half of it, as far as I know, has not been aired before. I had (but loaned out and forgotten who to) a tape of the whole Australian/New Zealand tour that I compiled off the radio at the time. When, then Double Jay - now Triple Jay, ran the Sydney press conference on air it was much longer, about 10 to 15 minutes worth, Mike talked about the writing of new songs (but it was much edited), meditation and the the control group Harrison on the aired press conference however there was much more Carl and Dennis including Dennis talking a lot about surfing in Southern California and Hawaii and also about the Harmony.

The interesting thing from an historians point of view is that Triple Jay radio station is part of the Government owned Australian Broadcasting Network and has the most extensive sound library in the country and the presence of these recordings indicates to me that there could be a lot more of the '78 tour in the ABC sound library ... including news reports of the Perth debacle after all is was national headlines for a few days.

We already know that the national TV broadcaster in New Zealand has a full 78 show in their library, now we have a fair indication the Australian national broadcaster has some of the tour in their sound library.

That's something I haven't heard much about. How big "news" was it ? "Headlines for a few days" you say, so what were the newspapers saying ?

I was at the concert mentioned as now being in storage at TVNZ. It was Christchurch at the QE2 stadium (which is now in ruins after last years earthquake). But heres the thing. A lot of acts touring in those days sounded nothing like they did on record so nobody worried. Concerts in Christchurch were and still are rare so the audience was there for the event rather than the act. I recall 10000 being the number mentioned and that would probably have been the only stadium gig of that and maybe several summers.

Perth may have been the same. It was the event. A big name group worse for wear? So what....the audience was the same!  Wink

For the those of you buying tickets to this years reunion, check out the poster below and weep!
