I had "WIBN" on the jukebox playing and this dude says outloud "oh no not this F&cking song" and his girlfriend says "It's the song from 50 first dates that's a good movie" and he replys "until THAT song came on"..man that pissed me off,I was going to say something but it was a scary looking dude with big muscles, kind of looked like a gang memeber so I didn't..all I could think was how ignorant those two were...it's sad when all people can think of is "50 first dates" and not "pet sounds" when they hear that song..don't get me wrong 50 first dates was a decent movie but they need some enlightenment on what the song really means and where it came from...

"It's the song from 50 first dates that's a good movie"

Actually, that's the part that's most wrong about all of this.

The thing is, Pet Sounds is essential listening for smart music fans and students.  For anyone else, they can take it or leave it.  If a person who has no interest in music history in general recognizes Wouldn't It Be Nice for being in a romantic comedy, no harm done, at least they're being exposed to the music in some way.  Billy Joel said that he was only able to introduce his daughter to the Beach Boys once she heard Don't Worry Baby in Never Been Kissed (funny enough, another Drew Barrymore romantic comedy).  Plus, the Beach Boys themselves (or at least Mike) have encouraged this by putting Wouldn't It Be Nice on the Still Cruisin' album because it was used in The Big Chill (though that is a great film).  For me, hearing Feel Flows in Almost Famous and Sail On Sailor in The Departed (which are two of my all-time favorite films) was my first exposure to those songs.

Plus, the Beach Boys themselves are very guilty of contributing much worse songs to much much worse films (*cough*ProblemChild*cough*Cocktail).

Your first mistake was assuming that the general public, like the ones you would find hanging out a bar, actually have standards.  Second, I'm not sure what kind of bar it was but most people prefer certain type (putting it as vaguely as I can) of music playing at a bar...I am unsure if The Beach Boys would fall in that category.

This bar I go to a lot has a jukebox and one of the CDs in there is Pet Sounds. after a few hours of drinking I was feeling pretty sauced and decided to play the whole album. a few songs in, everyone else in the bar starting saying things like "Why are the Beach Boys still on?" "I'm so tired of the Beach Boys." eventually, the manager of the bar went over to the jukebox and punched the side of it a number of times to make the jukebox skip all the tracks that hadn't been played yet.

yep.

The "50 First Dates" thing could be worse! Amongst a lot of people my age (27) and younger:

WIBN is the Cadbury song. "Wouldn't it be nice if the world was chocolate!".
Barbara Ann is "Car car car, car car Carpet Choice"
GV is "Come in and see the good, good, Good Guys. Pay cash and we'll slash the prices"
and for those that can remember Help Me, Rhonda is for the Sunday Times Classifieds section.

There are more... and I shed a solitary but meaningful tear every Gosh Darn time.

People in not liking music shocker...

I never really venture to the jukebox in the pubs that have them - although last positive music experience in pub involved me asking the woman behind the bar to turn up Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), to which she beamed like a nutter and cranked it up. Humanity has hope...

Adventurous, yes, but hardly worth a "bar room brawl!" Yikes!

And, funny it was the "50 First Dates" and not "It's Complicated!"  LOL

Oh, the shifting demographic!

I used to operate jukeboxes in restauraunts, you could not keep a Lynyrd Skynyrd cd in the box, because all the waitresses would go crazy listening "FREE BIRD" all day.  Every person through the door would play it.  It's like 10 minutes long.
