Hey all, was gonna wait to post this until I completed SMiLE A.D. 3.0, but I figured since we're all in a SMiLE fan-mix mode, what the hey. Spent all day on it yesterday and I couldn't wait to share it with my fellow SMiLE heads. Purists might wanna skip this one, lol. But, if you're down for a little "what if", I think you may enjoy it.  Smokin

Thanks to 'FatherOfTheMan' for the SMiLE A.D. artwork used in the video.

Wow

That is utterly beautiful, I love it with all my heart. Finally a good stereo mix to add between Wonderful and CIFOTM. Stunning work, (Look)ing alot forward to v3.0 Wink

Much appreciated!

BTW, Just to clarify: All voices are actually from '66 - '67 (minus the "Child, the child" which I believe was lifted from '71 SU). I did spend the time isolating BW's lead from BWPS, but ultimately I decided to just go with vintage BB's vocals. So, it is "purist", in a TSS kind of way.  Grin

I always consider it best not to bastardize from BWPS  Grin , but vocals from SU are ofc qualified. I heard on another post you were gonna make a new CIFOTM, the alternatebrian smile mix had stereo vocals for the chorus, do you have access to that for your mix? could be cool with stereo chorus left and right and then the new mono acetate in centre ^^ ofc all up to you! gl!

i'd love to know where you got all your vocal pieces from. i am in love with the background vox on the second verse.

Are the vocals isolated? I have a feeling it's just two vocal versions synched up, with the track clashing.

I started to isolate the vocals from the 1st chorus of CIFOTM. Actually, Carl's "Father of the man" from this Look mix comes from that chorus.
Problem is, with that chorus there are so many harmonies going on, that they tend to blend into the instrumental, visually.

Ultimately, I won't put out a SMiLE A.D. 3.0 unless there's at least ONE major mix revelation. I already have a few minor ones in the bag. CHILD just might be the one, if I can manage to isolate it well enough. I'm definitely open to more suggestions.

This track is a great full vocal alternative to the somewhat more purist instrumental version, which I always use in my fan mixes/compilations. Am I right in hearing even some Heroes And Villains Part 2 vocals in this mix?

Wow! That may just be the most creative Smile mix I've ever heard. Fantastic job, seltaeb. The only thing I would definitely think about changing is that note at about 1:49 that sticks out. I don't think you need it, but if you do think you do, I think you should mix it way down. Just my two cents. You've definitely given me some food for thought here, and probably a few others too.

Yep, those are from H&V pt 2. Thanks for listening!

Thanks! Well, I guess it should be thanks "The Beach Boys"!  Grin

For that verse I did a lot of layering. The main "mmm"'s are the Vegetables insert harmonies from The Smile Sessions box set (which I believe are all Brian).
On top of that are a few different pieces from "Can't Wait Too Long".
That last falsetto line by Brian is from the second to last line of Our Prayer.

I'll post up an acapella version soon so you can hear all of the different parts.

That is amazingly beautiful!!! Thanks so much!!!   Cool

No prob man! Thanks for listening.

Thanks sir! I like that idea. I think maybe if we can get rid of Mike's low note, it will have more of the impact I was going for. Definitely room for revisions until SMiLE A.D. 3.0.  Smokin

HA! Thanks dude! Giles Martin did an incredible job with The Beatles' LOVE album.

BTW, I just got out of a session and revised the Look mix. I used krabklaw's suggestion about taking out the vocal before the last chorus, and I think it sounds better. Thanks krabklaw! Constructive criticism goes a long way!
Also fixed a few timing issues (1st chorus notably, some vocals were fast. I really should've double checked that this morning), and used alternate time-stretching techniques on the 2nd verse, which I believe results in a less artifact-y sound.

Both download links have been replaced (youtube vid is still the same):

http://beachboyssmilead.blogspot.com/2012/01/beach-boys-look-smile-ad-stereo-mix.html

EDIT - I've already tweaked it some more. I think it's safe to say a longer and more elaborate version of Look will be on 3.0  Smokin

I really love this mix, especially the second verse! I do have to admit though that coming back from the twelfth street rag part is a little jarring, but apart from that. great job! Oh, and I was wondering, has that little tap sounding glitch around 4.5 seconds tried to be removed? I'm unsure if it's an removable artefact or something that just slipped under the radar Smiley

Yes sir. That glitch and a bunch of others have been fixed. Appreciate the feedback!

FYI, I've been fortunate enough to have a bunch of free time lately. So, I've been in the studio hard at work. SMiLE A.D. 3.0 is coming out better than I imagined.  Can't wait to share it with u all!

Just wanna add my congrats: this really is excellent work. When you're done with SMiLE A.D. (around maybe version 33.0 or 34.0 Smiley) you should seriously consider posting a copy to BW... or someone who has access to the great man. I know you've done all sorts of crazy manipulations to the original recordings but I really think this Look has the ring of something BW might have done in his heyday.

BTW not sure if you answered this already but where does that high sung part that begins at 0.43 and then again at 1.37 come from? It follows the melody unbelievably well and is really haunting. I'm wracking my brain but can't identify it.

My only critical comment would be that the track ends suddenly as it is but I guess this might be addressed in the work in progress.

Can't wait for 3.0. The world awaits with baited breath... will Good Vibrations be in?... will He Gives Speeches make a triumphant return?...
