In the a capella vocal snippet found on an old SMile boot (and later on alternate dumb angel 1), where Dennis is very prominent, who are the other voices? Is the high voice Audrey (sounds like a female with a vibrato)? I hear Brian's honky/whine and Carl's Do DO DO with Denny's huhs, but no Mike. When is this session from, and is it really from Been Too Long?
Sorry, I still don't know how to make my sample available to you, so hopefully you know what the hell I'm talking about.

I don't think I can accurately answer your question, grillo, but I can attempt to pinpoint what audio you are referring to a bit more just in case anybody is confused as to what section of music you are talking about.  Are you by any chance referring to the short piece of music that plays at the beginning of the Odeon version of Smile's "Can't Wait Too Long?"  I love that piece!!  I would also like to hear more about this, as "Can't Wait Too Long" is one of my favorite BB songs and I rarely hear this additional piece.  I would guess it at least has something to do with "Can't Wait Too Long," as they sing some of the song's melody on the latter half of that short piece.

That is a brilliant little fragment, isn't it? Keep in mind, however - that's not a Brian edit. If I remember correctly, it's Mark Linett's very rough edit; it also showed up on the 1988 Capitol tape box memo. SOT 19 and Archaeology have some cool sessions for this tune. Need more...!

You mean Mark might have transplanted that segment from another recording?

This is one of a few snippets I've always thought embodied the idea of SMiLE's exquisite shorts, and wondered if it might be such. I guess we'll know in about three weeks!

Actually, that whole 1:46 edit that's being discussed here is Mark's edit. Most likely it's on one of the Can't Wait Too Long reels in the band's inventory.

One thing I'd like to figure out is how Can't Wait Too Long was tracked, and which sessions were tracking or vocal sessions. The way I've understood it is that it was worked on as a series of basic tracks and scratch vocals at Wally Heider and at Brian's studio in October and November of 1967 as a Wild Honey session and then Brian came back to it in July of 1968 to sweeten up what was recorded both instrumentally and vocally.

The fragment I'm thinking of is about 13 seconds long and then goes into the hand-clappy part that usually leads into the Way too long/wait too long verse.
Does anyone else hear Audrey, or another female voice, doing the high part?

Sounds like it could be Brian. Doesn't sound female to me, at least. Was Audree even on any Beach Boys tracks?

It does sound like a female voice on the track, but I think it's Brian or Al.

Surely this is an unused Beach Boys album title.

Did Brian ever make any test mixes of CWTL? As you said, there is the ML 1988 Mix but I am curious as to where the two mixes from Archaeology (disc 5, tracks 6 and 7) came from. Are these authentic BW mixes or were they made by someone else's hand?

I always LOVED that more elaborate vocal intro there (sounds a bit more SMiLE-like to me) and wish that it had been featured on one of the official releases of this song.  I definitely hope that we're treated to more CWTL sessions at some point in the future.

I agree, man. Parts like that make you wonder what CWTL might have turned into. Does anyone have any info on those two mixes from Archaeology? I would really like to know their origin. Keep rockin' guys!

I always wondered why that bit wasn't included on the official edit of the song.
