Yes, yes, yes and utterly yes. And don't forget of Montreal's "Coquelicot asleep in the poppies' and 'The Gay Parade' - all though both more conceptual than 'in sections' i guess.

EDIT: Just realized someone beat me to it. But man, do yourself a favour and check out these bands. Anyone who is into SMiLE is bound to love this stuff. I'm sure sonic agrees with me.
(btw sonic, I'm 'psychedelia' on what Wink

:D  Hey hey, you should come visit the E6 Townhall!  http://www.e6townhall.com

ALSO funny thing, I have an Olivia Tremor Control bootleg, were the audience starts shouting out SMiLE songs as requests... "Do You Like Worms!  Cabin Essence!  Our Prayer!"  And the band members laugh and say "Hey look, we know our influences but let's not make it embarrassing..."

I take issue with this line of thinking. I really dislike those bands, and pretty much all other bands who wear their BW/BB influence on their sleeve. It's not just Beach Boys influenced stuff. Generally, regarding bands, with the few who i do like and follow, when i hear "check out (this) if you like (that)" i usually find the recommendation/comparison horrific and have learned to stay as far away from the proteges as possible. It's sort of a rule of thumb with me that if someone is REALLY influenced by something that i really like, i'm going to hate it. But this is really only a phenomenon i've noticed with "bands" not all music.

And this is contributing to the discussion exactly how? You're thread-crapping.

A huge amount of prog rock is composed in discrete sections, FWIW. "Close to the Edge" is a really fine side-long sectional tune that includes some common themes.

Wow, I find that extremely odd. The way I see it, Kevin Barnes (of Montreal) isn't just influenced by the Smile era recordings, but he's made something that is equally good, and at times even better. I'd be interested in hearing what other stuff you listen to.

If you have some sort of issue with me, which it certainly seems you do, i'd like it if you'd just let me know. This isn't the first time that i have sensed from what you've responded to me in a thread that you have something more personal against me.

How is anything that anyone posts contributing to the conversation? How is what i wrote not contributing to the discussion? Are message boards not for opinions and personal experiences relating to a specific subject? I am simply bothered by the sort of blanket statement/assumption that i responded to, and wanted to make it clear that not everyone subscribes to that. That is what you view as "thread crapping," a differing view?

I don't think River Deep Mountain High by Ike & Tina Turner has been mentioned yet. It started out as three seperate fragments that Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and Phil Spector came up with during writing sessions and then threw together to create the song...

It would be interesting to discuss who of Brian's L.A. contemporaries if any recorded in fragments during his work on Smile.

I thought of Micky Dolenz's song Shorty Blackwell, it's about his cat but he reached pretty far with the writing and structure of the song and has several different sections woven together. It's worth a listen for discussion purposes. I think he cut that record in 68 or 69, I can't recall, it was on one of the albums after Peter Tork left the group. And Mike Nesmith did that too, on a song like Writing Wrongs from 68. Pretty far out stuff.

Yes? I definitely appreciate the "foley"/electroacoustic/tape manipulation aspect of OTC, but i just don't like any of the Elephant 6 stuff with the very big exception of A Hawk And A Hacksaw, particularly the first album (one of my favorite albums) but i really hear no resemblance to anything else from that scene in his music, and it's totally unrelated to rock band culture. A lot of my distaste for BB influenced stuff comes from the vocals. A lot of singing (especially male) is hard for me to even tolerate. Just a personal hang up, i guess.

Frank Zappa often used this kind of a collage style back around the same time as Brian (see Absolutely Free, We're Only In It For The Money, Lumpy Gravy, Uncle Meat).  In many ways, Frank and Brian were polar opposites, but they employed some similar working methods back then.  They were both fond of working variations on a theme and then splicing them together.

Yeah. I've always seen certain parallels between Smiley Smile and the early Zappa albums you mention. "Wonderful" and "She's Going Bald" share spoken sections with, say, "Who Are The Dream Police?" and "The Idiot Bastard Son".

When on stage Zappa would use sign language to indicate which "stock module" the band was to play at a given moment...

One of the more famous songs is Welcome to the Black parade by My Chemical romance. Reached #9 in the US and went #1 in UK.
