In the new issue of Rolling Stone is a 1-page article on the Beach Boys. Absolutely NOTHING new - it mentions the Smile box set, the "reunion", the "Do It Again" re-record, and the possibility of a reunion tour. Basically all the stuff that we already knew here!
And no review of Smile!

Technically, the mid-90s were two decades ago...if not exactly twenty years. Also, BWPS was completed as a "concept" in 2003, but not recorded until 2004. I agree that calling Bayers a "Beach Boys session vet" is a bit of a stretch, but he did play on STARS & STRIPES.

Saying that after Smile collapsed that Brian became a recluse and the Beach Boys a touring nostalgia act and implying the one led directly to the other is very misleading. It dismisses ten years of some of the most creative and greatest beach boys moments on record and in live performance. Sunflower, Surf's Up, Wild Honey, Friends, Beach Boys Love You etc.

I felt the same way when I read it. Immediately! I do believe it is a total lack of knowledge(ignorance) by the reporter/writer. Simply did not bother to do simple research on the group. I sincerely doubt he was a veteran reporter. That's the trouble these days, young bucks writing about groups in a whipstitch fashion. Now I'm sure someone will post that RS sucks anyway. Still inexcusable for RS.

These records didn't sell in their time, but I think most folks who had enough interest to check them out would agree that their "peak" at least lasted a bit into the 70s.

I know two or three people who bought the Sunflower/Surf's Up twofer right after they had bought Pet Sounds (and probably SS/WH) and as far as I know they didn't regret it. For some of the younger fans it seems far more natural to explore the early-70s catalogue than the group's earlier material I think.

Some of the early 70s albums are actually my fave BBs records. I really, really can't understand how they didn't do well in the charts. In my opinion there are so many beautiful tracks on them that the mainstream should know about. Everyone knows GV or GOK but they are missing out on many other brilliant tracks. I firmly believe that the BBs are the most underrated band ever but I am so glad that I found all these gems! I feel better for it!

Sez you imo. Heck, Pet Sounds took longer to grow on me than Sunflower did.
