Here's another one that's a little annoying. A catch-all greeting that businesses think appropriate so they copy one another. And I don't care if I sound like some ol' fart.  Seriously. Totally. For reals.

You go into a restaurant such as Chili’s, Applebee's, Denny's, (or Breast Buy) with your wife or significant other next to you when the host/waiters/waitresses greet you with, “Hi guys!"  When it’s obvious that you’re a guy being accompanied by a woman. I feel like responding with, "Hi girls!"  Or looking around and saying, "Wha? I'm the only guy here!"

So gag me with a spoon.

"Guys" in the casual sense can refer to both genders. It's my understanding that a lot of other languages are like this, too (in Spanish, chicos = males or mixed gender group, chicas = only females, right?).

Well...........I never knew that!  This only started the past couple of years around here, as far as I know. Again at Starbucks last night, we were greeted with, "Hi guys, what can I get you tonight".  No big deal, just seems a little odd.  And what gets me is that these busnesses copy this "greeting" from one another.

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Maybe it's just a youth thing. I don't know how old you guys are, but I'm 24, and I always use "guys" to refer to mixed gender groups, never thought there was anything wrong with it.

edit: I just said "you guys"! You are probably both men... but that's a great example of how I use the term. If I didn't say "guys" I would have to say "y'all" or something.

Where I come from (Southern California), using the term "guys" to refer to two or more people of any gender has been in use for years, in fact since I was a little kid in the 1950's.  It's more commonly used to refer to two or more males or a mixed group of males and females than a group of females only.

Yeah, I grew up with the idea that 'guys' is a unisex term, and thus far at least no one's ever called me on it.

I dunno, for some reason I'm just starting to notice it. Not for the unisex group thing - I've heard mixed groups at a time called "guys", but just becoming aware of the fact that businesses are using the term. You know, informal greeting with "you guys". I've been around since the 50's too, but this is the first time I've seen restaurants and retail stores refer to customers as "Hi guys". That's unusual to me. No big deal, but definitely seeing/hearing it more often the past couple of years.

I also see about 3 or 4 new posters here with under 4 posts each (unless old posters using new alias's).  Welcome!

Back in the days of Chaucer, a girl was simply a young child.
