Okay...so thanks to having the right Firefox add-ons, I can tell you this:
- The two "Vegetables" tracks, while they sound impressive, are low-quality: they're MP3-encoded at 128kbps.
- The tagged title of that mix of "Vegetables" is "Vega-Tables [clean start]"
Now to see if I can poke around the source code and see if there are any other songs sitting there that are simply not linked.
And the artwork that automatically comes up when you drop them into iTunes is Smiley Smile!

I have to say I really wish this version would have used the keyboard overdub, you know the one I mean? The real glassy sounding one, not sure what instrument it actually is, but you can here it at the end of the Smiley version.

I love it, but not sure it's based on a vintage mix.
For one thing the way the whistle in the second "do a lot" faded into the acapella section. SMiLE = hard edits, not time stretched crossfades.
I think they had a lot of sections they wanted to include, and just played around with them till it worked. And it works!

Which when you hear it on the SOT mixing session, you can hear it was supposed to be throughout the whole song. I've long wondered about that mix session. Was it for a long-lost finished Vega-Tables. There are some who maintain that instrument was overdubbed
for
the Smiley version, but I've never believed that. I think these were tapes that were butchered for the Smiley sessions, and have now gone. All that is left is that mix tape, (which last I heard Alan Boyd was still looking for in the vaults, having heard it on SOT), and what is on the Smiley mix.
I too would have loved to have heard that instrument on this version

I absolutely love it, what instrument is it exactly, do you know IRH?

i'm inclined to think, given Brian's methods then, that he would not have used
both
Do A Lot sections. In this version, it kind of serves as the chorus (amazing that at one point, the two singles he had planned for the album didn't have a chorus; i love him), which makes it even less likely that he would have used both versions. Who knows.
Notice that in the Sessions disc, there are sessions for "Chorus 1" and "2nd Chorus".

Oh, this sounds not good, like they're cross-fading Friday Night and Vega-Tables on the actual Disc 1... But I may be wrong. Let's wait and see.

Is it my imagination, or because I'm hung over, that Vege-Tables slightly over-compressed, and the percussion rather intrusive at the beginning? Mr Linnet does have a history of being a bit heavy on the treble dial, but maybe this is just me being over-sensitive.

It's a comparatively low quality MP3, which might account.

Wow! This is a brilliant piece of work - that rocking mama says as the chorus whupped me six ways from Sunday (and it's only Saturday!).
The tune has always been a bit of a bete noir with me on Smile - it gets the subtle humour, but it's awkward. previous officially released versions of this have always been so...bland. Boiled broccoli. This one is a raw organic cornucopia!
The fan stereo mix by George Dusault, which used the rocking 'mama says' as a tag first and that amazing vocal middle 8 (then newly released on the stereo SS SOT sessions...or something), combined with the SOT tracks first revealed the possibilities of the track to me. This official one I think really nails its rich heritage, its possibilities. It successfully combines the surprising power of the track with its breezy-ness, kinda like windchimes.
That said, a few of the edits are a bit distracting (as a previous poster said - hard edits=vintage smile), and I'd love to see some thoughts on how this was extrapolated from session material & test edits. But this was always going to be an exercise in interpretation at various levels and they really did something special with this one.

anifestation of these as much as anyone....
Would it also be wise to posit that this is the version of Vegatables that's going to be on the 45, what with the clean start caveat? Unless, like H&V, they're putting unique mixes on there as well?

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

I am now very excited that there will be no crossfades between songs. I really hope that is the case as I don't think it would have been done in '67.

I think you actually mean track 20 (the instrumental insert takes 1-8) on disc 2 of SOT 17. THAT one, near the end, has the celeste overdub.

But your'e right, track 20.
But I did say at the end of the disk, which of course means near the end, near the middle.

That [clean start] is puzzling and does seem fishy. What else could that mean besides there being another version on the set that doesn't have a clean start? It would seem, based on this tag, that this is the 45 version.

Forgive my ignorance, but I've never put this together before. Is this new tag at the end of this version essentially the same riff (not the same vocal, but essentially the same vamp) as the piano/vox break of Smiley's Wonderful?

Yes, which is the same as the H&V variations, They are all Bicycle Rider in a major key.
