Or was he mocking something in the magazines? or how he thought Brian thought of himself? If I heard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ-gGIb54pw from my son, I'd fall over backwards proud as hell that somehow I had fathered a mad genius of sound. Ahhh just listen to it. It's so complete, Brian's writing and arrangements and productions are so satisfying, so endlessly fulfilling. I mean, Here Today is a really far out song. That piano groove before the flash...flash flash....flash....flash flash part is so funky. I bet this song had Paul Mccartney jumping around the room in ecstasy. Right Paul? I know you read this board. Just celebrating the absolute madness of Brian Wilson's genius.

I mean have you ever put your mind on both the guitar parts and the horns? the guitar plays an amazing feel that Brian carefully got in the studio with the musicians. The guitar bounces in one places like a ball up and down. Did Carol Kay play on this track? Because Here Today has some of the coolest subtlest bass playing I've ever heard on a record.

land of flowers

and i do think there should be ritualized meetings of listening to the beach boys while in a most appropriate state of mind from the best sound system and vinyls any of us have. we all worship this music at home in private or with friends anyway. i know i've turned people onto this band and they became as devoted as pure music fans (don't care too much for all this stuff). the Wild Honey era Surf's Up will be our sacred music from now on. only after lengthy purification [shrooming in the woods for three days] can it be heard.

Who knows. Maybe Murry was tryng to encourge a little humility in a son. I've a feeling that much of what we thnk we know is exaggeration. Kids who are hand fulls can egg some uncharacteristic behavior from parents. Audrey is getting a pass from history to some extent maybe. I'm sure they both were doing their best and secondhand characterizations [even or especially from sons] might not be the best measure.

I think Murry (in his own mind) was trying to stop Brian from getting big headed about his critical acclaim .

Not even.  Murray was a narcissistic ass.  You don't talk to children the way he did.  Just read that patronizing letter he wrote to Brian that someone scanned online, making Brian (who did the lion's share of work in the band and gave the guys careers) feel like he should be grateful they tolerated him.  All parents think they do their best, but if their best was good enough you wouldn't see a lot of the adults you see today.

Definitely mocking and in a way, saying "Yeah they call you a genius...HA.  Whatever.  You call this stuff genius?"  Murry had some effective input here and there but they were all on the surface aesthetics to the recordings....speeding up vocal tracks, forcing the treble on guitars or annoying the hell out of Al during the "Help Me Rhonda" sessions.  I don't think Murry got Brian's stuff.  The jealousy was evident.  Here was his son, doing more than he ever accomplished in his whole life--- and better.  Murray couldn't help throw his weight around---all to make himself think he was still somebody.

If Brian produces albums like Pet Sounds etc and we call him a genius, does that mean that for siring Brian, Murry should rightly be called a genius too? Without Murry, no Brian. Without Brian, still some Murry two step side stepping all over the planet earth.
